What isThe difference between single and double action pistols?
Single action revolver requires that you cock the hammer with your thumb prior to pulling the trigger to fire (think any old western with John Wayne).
Double action revolver requires only that you pull the trigger - the long trigger pull cocks the hammer and drops it when the sear trips but reduces accuracy (think any Hawaii 5-O episode when McGarrett is firing his pistol).
There are single action auto loading pistols and double action only auto loading pistols AND double/ single action auto loading pistols too.
Three examples in respective order are: Colt model 1911 (just about any John Wayne WWII movie) Beretta Cougar DAO (sorry no movie) and Beretta 92 (Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon and our current standard US Military sidearm).

Are springfield armory handguns legal in Massachusetts?
Springfield Armory handguns will not be available in Massachusetts. The factory has said..."WE HAVE NO INTENTION OF GOING THROUGH THE MASSACHUSETTS CERTIFICATION PROCESS because the laws and regulations are not clear".
Update 10/16/2009: We have heard that rumors that Springfield Armory is interested in getting some of their handguns certified for sale in MA. I hope that do but I've heard this before and nothing has ever happened. The process is not that hard. S&W certifies handguns for MA all the time...(Taken from four seasons firearms webpage)

No way to know without a sn. If no sn, no way to know.
The American M-1 Garand was designed by John C. Garand at the Springfield Arms factory in Springfield Massachussetts in 1932, and adopted as the U.S. army's standard infantry rifle in 1936 to replace the Springfield M1903 rifle. The M1 went out of service as the .U.S.'s standard infantry rifle in 1957 when it was replaced by the selective-fire M-14. Although the Garand went out of service in 1957, it was used in small numbers until 1967 and to this day is used by drilling teams and military honor guards.
The Springfield 187j was made by Savage and is the same as the 87.
They were produced before manufacturers were required to put a sn on every firearm made.
