Stamp Collecting (Philately)

It is what is called a "Picture Stamp". The Hulbert Brothers Patented a camera in 1885 that had multiple lenses on it. It basically took 12 identical pictures at once. After developing they could be cut apart and distributed. Their are also some that are perforated (at an additional charge) for easy separation. Genelli bought the Patent License from the Hulbert Brothers.

You will need to consult the catalogs to identify the specific stamp you are referring to. Most libraries will have a copy of Scott's Postage Stamp Catalog of the World. First of all, you have to identify the specific stamp or card. That in itself can be a daunting task, but most of the catalogs are well illustrated with lots of information. Once you know what item you have, the catalog will provide a set of prices that can be used to estimate value.

It is worth 32 cents, unless marked for postcard rate or First-Class Presort. Those are 20 and 25 cents respectively.

CTO in the philatelic world refers to Canceled To Order. It is not a good thing. These stamps are actually printed with the cancellation already on them. It is done by countries that are printing the stamps primarily for sale to collectors, not for postage. Many such items are not even listed in the catalog.

If you are certain that it is from 1919, then it must be Scott Catalogue number OX21. The catalogue value is $0.20. That is the minimum value for any stamp listed. Therefore, the true market value for the stamp is very small - maybe around $0.05-0.10.

Certainly! However, you are probably over paying. The first ounce is 44 cents and the second and additional ounces are 17 cents each. So 2 44 cent stamps will pay for 3 ounces with 10 cents left over.

That would be Scott Number US 1755. A full sheet of these stamps has a catalog value of $40.00.

It will have a minimal value. The stamp itself is very common and in used condition is essentially only going to cover handling costs. The cancellation may be of interest to some postal history collectors, but I would doubt you could get a $1 for it.

30 cents

Tagged refers to a method of marking a stamp so that automatic mail machines can work with a letter. Early trials included graphite lines on the back of stamps. Today, most stamps are tagged with a phosphorus ink that is transparent and printed over the stamp design. Ultraviolet lights can detect them and allow the envelopes to be oriented to enable automatic cancelling machines and sorting machines to do their work.

Self adhesive stamps were first produced in the US in 1974 for the Christmas stamps. Over time, more and more of them were made this way. Today the majority of the stamps issued today are produce as self adhesive.

because if you send a letter, each additional ounce is 17 cents. (ie: 1 oz is 0.44, 2 oz is 0.61, and 3 oz is 0.78.) Flats are the same (ie: 1 oz is 0.88, 2 oz is 1.05, etc.)

As of 12/21/11 it is 20 cents for the second ounce. First class rates will be up to 45 cents, first increase since 5/2008, additional ounce will be unchanged at 20 cents. Postcards increase to 32 cents then, also.

Scott US#1470

This stamp was first issued in 1972. It can be purchased online from a dealer for 15 cents used, but is $1 mint. A sheet of 50 might be sold for $10 to a dealer, but I suspect they would offer you face value.

In Great Britain, the stamps were 1 cent. In the US postage was 5 cents for the first half ounce. They weren't available in the US for several years after that before they were issued.

The easiest way is to buy them from the Italian Post Office. You can purchase them online through their web site. Stamp dealers typically have a selection as well.

Stamp Duty is a tax that was introduced originally in the Netherlands in 1624. It quickly spread to other countries soon after. It stated that any legal documents must have a physical stamp placed on it to note that the document had been paid for and was, therefore, legally effective. Modern versions of this concept no longer require an actual stamp.

Scott Number 970 pictures a group of pioneers. This 3c stamp was issued in 1948. It has a minimal value used and can be purchased for 70 cents in mint condition.

Another reason may simply be because world leaders and royalty like King George V, King George VI, Edward VII ( Prince of Wales), Queen Elizabeth, King Carol and Queen Mana of Raumania, King Farouk of Egypt, Former American President Franklin Roosevelt. Adolf Hitler, Maharaja Jiyaji Rao Sindhia of Gwalior, the Nawab of Bahawalpur were known stamp collectors.

Of the very few freedoms still left to us in our regimented life today, the freedom to spend our leisure in the manner of our choice is one. Pursuit of a chosen hobby is one of the most common means of spending one's leisure. When the chosen hobby merely helps to amuse oneself while passing time, it remains a mere pastime and no more. But when the hobby not only helps to relieve one of ennui but also in an enriching experience by itself, it becomes an ideal pursuit in one's leisure. Philately or the art of stamp collection has for this reason been rightly called the King of Hobbies and the Hobby of Kings.

The punched holes are referred to as perforations. The edges of the current self adhesive stamps is basically a cut edge.

Scott Number 1171

Minimal value for this stamp indicates that the cost is in packaging and tracking and not the stamp itself. A dealer isn't going to be interested in purchasing a single copy. You would be better to use it for postage rather than trying to sell it. Or trade with another collector!
