What does interference mean in a engine?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It means that a fully open valve in the engine occupies the same space as a piston at the top of its travel. Of course under normal conditions this never happens at the same time.

When a timing belt breaks the valves freeze at whatever position they are at the moment of the belt failure. As the rest of the engine coasts to a stop if a valve is fully open it will be contacted by the piston and do great amounts of harm.

In a non-interference engine the two moving parts have no potential to contact each other. When a timing belt breaks the engine can be repaired by replacing the timing belt and retiming the engine.

Don't take the chance. Replace the belt and water pump when the manual says to. The belt could break just as you are trying to beat that semi...

Location of pcv 1998 Subaru Forester?

PCV valve is at the top of the engine behind the coil. It screws into the intake manifold and has a hose attached to the other end. It looks like it is just an adapter fitting for the hose, so go get the new one and replace the thing that looks like it.

How do you replace ignition key for 2009 Subaru Forester?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There are locksmiths that actually specialize in the automotive field. I started specializing in auto locks and keys in 1980.

I am making a duplicate key, 05/09 Forester, for a used car dealer at this time.

I started the search for key data with my automotive lock supplier. There were 3 choices for the key until I gave them the VIN number, then 2 were eliminated. They called their contact at a dealership and got the correct key number.

My next Forester key replacement job will begin with a call to my local dealer for the factory key number. Then I will search key suppliers including; internet, locksmiths and dealers for the best price.

My shop has the capability of copying side milled keys. (Laser keys, two track, 4 track, etc.) It should be possible to get the code, (cutting information) from the local dealer for the legal owner of a vehicle. Ask about the price from the dealer, it may include the key being cut. Ask about the dealer cost to program the transponder as it may be comparable to a locksmith.

It is better to prepare for the worst. Whether you are buying a car new or used, it would be prudent to get codes and any key data available from your dealership.

There are crooked people that pretend to be automotive locksmiths that will promise you a key, overcharge you and give tons of excuses why the key won't work and why you can't get a refund so please be careful.

Basically you can get information all over the internet and if you have done some homework you will make an informed decision. Don't wait until you are put in a desperate position where you may have to pay hundreds of extra dollars for a key.

The combined cost of a duplicate key for a Forester, (the key, cutting, programming) will cost from $ 300.00 to $ 500.00 from a reputable locksmith.

(This quote is for an original Subaru key. Aftermarket keys usually cost less.

What is the recommended mileage to cover after which one has to change ATF filter and transmission fluid for Subaru Forester?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There is no mileage where one "has" to change the transmission fluid or filter. It is your car and you can do with it as you wish. The warranty manual for my 2000 Forester recommends changing the fluid every 15,000 miles when used under severe conditions. I recommend changing ATF yearly and you shouldn't need to change the filter unless it has been damaged. It is as easy as changing the engine oil, so why not do a little preventive maintenance? --Ken

How do you replace Subaru Forester tail light bulbs?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

depends on what year. for my 2001, in the back cargo area, there are little plastic covers that look like grates. those just snap off and you have access to the tail light bulbs

On a 2008, which is likely similar to many earlier models of same body style, open the liftgate and you'll see 2 bolts holding the lens housing. Remove those and then it snaps out. Pull it out as straight as possible. The outside part of the assembly is held with plastic prongs that go straight in. They come out fairly easily. You'll see all the light sockets on the back of the housing. Turn the socket counter clockwise to remove.

How can the VIN be determined from a 2.5l Subaru engine number?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It can't. The the only thing that a VIN number has in common with the engine is the 8th digit of the VIN tells what type of engine it is. The VIN number though may allow the dealer to access the engine number from their databases.

How do you remove the headlight assembly on a 2003 Subaru Forester It must be removed to change bulbs other than headlamp?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

according to the manual you have to remove the front grill and plastic lamp cover then unbolt the lamp housing to remove it then replace the bulbs - unfortunately it is very vague as to the exact procedure for removing the front grill.

I dont think you actually have to remove the headlight assembly, you open the hood and get to the bulb through the back side of the headlight.

How do you install aftermarket stereo in a 2007 Subaru Forester?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

1) remove old stereo
2) put new stereo in where old one was

If you are looking for detail, there are no generic instructions. Anything more than the instructions above requires information as to what is in the car now and what you intend to put in. When you have that information, go to www.crutchfield.com. I use them for nearly every change of equipment that I do and they will help with whatever you need. Not always the cheapest, but they are the best.

Why 1998 Subaru Forester turn signal lights not workin although you have replaced all bulbs?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A likely cause is that the flasher has failed. On my 1999 Subaru Forester this is an inexpensive (~$10.00 from my local discount auto parts store) and small part.

What I found was that obtaining the replacement part was easy and actually replacing it was challenging. The challenge is that the flasher is located near/on the firewall fairly high above the driver's footwell. For me this meant being in the driver's seat upside down with my head near the pedals, my feet on the back of the seat, and my arm snaking up through the wiring to access the flasher.

Best of luck.

It's a switch near the gearstick, which when pressed, turns on an amber warning light on the dashboard. The function of it is to hold you in a particular gear - for going downhill and such. To get rid of it you just need to flip the switch.

Why won't 99 Subaru Forester start after getting gas?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I'm guessing you ran the car out of gas; and that is its only problem.

In most of these cases it takes 'time' to get fuel to the motor from the tank. To "Prime" the fuel injection system try the following: # Turn the key to the RUN position, but do not attempt to start the car. # Leave the key in the RUN position for at least 30 seconds (listen for the fuel pump to run, then shut off) # Turn the key to the OFF position, for 20 seconds # Repeat 1 - 3, 5 times # Try starting the car, if it does not start try repeating one more time. It could also be that the fuel filter, tank screen, is clogged - debris in the tank can accumulate in the screen when the tank runs empty. You would have to have the tank removed and cleaned.

All wheel drive fuse location on forester?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Under the hood, right side near the hood hinge. Insert a fuse in the holder, after flipping the top open, to disableall-wheel drive. (there are spare fuses in the fuse box near the battery) Note that Subaru does not recommend that you do this except for use as a diagnostic tool because it does change the way that the car handles. --Ken
