Sugar gliders actually do make good pets if they're suited to you. First, you should adopt two. Second, they don't smell bad if the cage is kept clean and they're on a healthy diet (Aka NOT PELLETS!). Yes, they do make noise though... Mine don't make much, but if yours make so much noise that they bother you, place the cage in an area of the house that is not in your bedroom.
Now, adopting sugar gliders. There are some sugar glider rescues out there, but I'd need to know your location to tell you which one you should look into.

What is a sugar glider's function?

When was the sugar glider discovered?
Sugar gliders come from Australia (including its island state of Tasmania), Indonesia, and Papua-New Guinea. They were originally native to Australia, but easily spread to other northern islands.
Climatic conditions preferred by sugar gliders include rainforests and bushland (both wet and dry sclerophyll forest). They can adapt to cool-temperate climates, such as that found in Tasmania, and warmer, humid climates of northern Australia, but they are healthiest in drier bushland rather than moist rainforest.
At what age will sugar gliders learn how to glide?
Sugar gliders reach sexual maturity at 7-10 months. The mating season usually occurs in August, but can extend from June to November. The dominant male is often the only male in the social group to mate, but it is the females who decide who he mates with. The male first approaches the female he is hoping to mate with and rubs his forehead's scent gland on her belly. If she accepts him, she then rubs her forehead on his belly, and they mate. The gestation period is short, only 15-17 days. The female births 1-3 underdeveloped young which are hairless, less than 0.5 g in weight, and only 5 mm in length. The young make their way into their mother's marsupium where they grasp onto one of four teats. There they remain for 60-70 days. Ten days after they emerge, their eyes open, and after a month they are ready to eat solid food.
Sugar gliders get most of their water from the foods that they eat, if they're fed a proper diet. Due to this fact, it might appear that the sugar gliders are not drinking much if you go by just the water bottle (or bowl) level alone.
Despite the fact that sugar gliders get most of their water from foods, it is still required to have at least one water bottle in the cage at all times.
Are sugar gliders as pets legal in Utah?
Read below for the former answer. I've seen this all over the internet. It is incorrect. The following site, http://wildlife.utah.gov/rules/R657-03.php, specifically states that sugar gliders are NOT governed. You can also click on this site and download a rather large PDF file from the Utah Division of Wildlife. Page 9, section R657-3-17, it states that animals classified as "noncontrolled" require no certification/registration. Go to page 18, and you'll see that sugar gliders are classified as noncontrolled. They are LEGAL to have as pets, and don't require anything (state wise) to legally own them.
Former answer to question:
well, this is what I have been trying to find out myself, I have seen websites that proclaim that sugar gliders are completely illegal, while others say that you can certainly own a sugar glider. but the majority of websites and the most updated\credible websites say that you must have an certificate of registration- here are the steps: before an individual can apply for a certificate, they must obtain a letter from they're local animal shelter allowing possession of a sugar glider in the locality in which they live. Utah state county does not allow possession of sugar gliders or any animal that is not native to north america. requests for sugar gliders are approved with the following requirements:
holding facility will not be less than 18 inches by 24 inches.
holding facility must be higher than long.
holding facility must be inspected before sugar gliders are a acquired.
holding facility will be inspected yearly and be available to spot inspections when deemed necessary.
no breeding of the animal is to take place. (possession of both male and female not allowed)
no animals are to be resold or re-homed for any reason.
failure to comply with these laws will be ground for forfeiture of the registration certificate. the cost of the certificate is: $5.00 handling fee, and $50.00 certificate fee for the first year. it may be renewed after that for $25.00 each new year, how does an 11 year old know this? I HAD been looking into getting one until I came across this complicated and costly law, so now I am looking into a ferret :)

If you really want a sugar glider, you can make a PowerPoint Presentation. Include in the presentation the good things about sugar gliders, and what you will do to take care of it. Be creative! Use colorful pictures and backgrounds!
When you are finished, find a day that is good for you and your parents. Maybe during dinner on Saturday night? Once you find a day, present your work to your parents.
Hopefully, your parents will be impressed and agree to get you a sugar glider. That is the best way to do it. No need to wait until you're 18 and you move out!
Good Luck!
