The rivers flooded each spring. When the water went down, natural levees or raised areas of soil, remained behind. The sumerians built the levees even higher and used them to keep back the flood waters. During summer when the land became dry, they poked holes in levees. The river water that ran throught the holes made channels in the soil. Then they used it to water crops.
