Do you need a tetanus shot after stepping on a small rusty nail?

As soon as possible. You really don't want to wait because the area that was punctured can get infected and the blood stream has been exposed as well. Go to the ER or get a doctor appointment IMMEDIATELY and get it taken care of, for your own health

What are the chances of getting tetanus after getting scratched by a rusty nail?

Absolutely, if you have not had a tetanus shot in the last several years. However, it's not the rusty nail that gives you the disease. It's the Clostridium tetani bacteria commonly found in soil that causes the disease. The nail (rusty or otherwise) makes the puncture wound and the bacteria is driven deep into the flesh where anaerobic conditions allow it to thrive. Why skeletal muscle can undergo tetanus?

It can but it undergoes incomplete tetanus, in this case there is a short period of relaxtion before a new contractian is initiated. The muscle contraction will go up in a wave like line..

What is the difference between tonus and tetanus?

1. Even when a muscle appears to be at rest, a certain amount of sustained contraction is occurring in its fibers. This is called muscle tone. (Muscle tone is a response to nerve impulses that originate repeatedly from the spinal cord and stimulate a few muscle fibers.) A tetanic contraction is when a forceful sustained contraction lacks even partial relaxation.

What is the cause of tetanus?

Tetanus, or lockjaw is a serious infection caused by Clostridium tetani bacteria which produce a toxin that affects the brain and nervous system. The toxin leads to stiffness in the jaw muscles as well as other muscles. The infection can cause severe muscle spasms, serious breathing difficulties, and can ultimately be fatal.

Clostridium tetani spores can be found most commonly in soil, dust and manure, but also exist virtually anywhere. If deposited in a wound the neurotoxin interferes with nerves that control muscle movement.

Can you drink alcohol after a tetanus shot?

For a vaccine to work, it has to provoke a response from the body's immune system to create antibodies which would protect you against the disease you are being vaccinated against.

Alcohol does not interfere with this process of immune response, BUT alcohol is basically a poison that the body has to work hard to process. The vaccine provoked antibody response is also hard work for the body, and I don't think it is wise to ask the body to do too much at once. I would advise anyone who has had a vaccination of any sort not to stress the body unnecessarily for a couple of days after having a vaccine.

What is a tdap shot?

Also known as the DPT vaccination, The TDaP shot stands for the Tetanus (which causes lockjaw), Diphtheria (which is not very common), and Accelular Pertusis (aka whooping cough). This shot is 3 vaccines in a single vaccination. The shot itself does not hurt very much. But, afterwards your arm may feel tense and sore because, this shot includes the Tetanus: these side effects should subside after 1-3 days. I would definitely recommend getting this shot! Actually, most schools are now requiring students to get it other wise they will be banned from school. This shot is also not just for students it is recommended for people of all ages.
