Romo passed for 306 yards and tied a club-record with five touchdown passes in the Cowboys' 38-10 win over Tampa Bay on Thanksgiving Day in 2006.
Through the 2008 season, that was November 27, 2003 when the Lions defeated the Green Bay Packers, 22-14.
For years, the Dallas Cowboys' Thanksgiving Day opponent pretty much depended on which network televised the game. FOX, the network of the National Football Conference, and CBS, which focuses on American Football Conference games, usually have alternated their November holiday schedules every year.
The same formula also was true for the early Thanksgiving Day game hosted by the Detroit Lions. If FOX televised the early game, then CBS got the late afternoon game in Dallas.
But things have loosened up a bit. In 2015, all network games played on Thanksgiving featured NFC teams. FOX televised the Philadelphia Eagles-Detroit game. CBS did the Carolina Panthers-Dallas game. And NBC televised an evening contest between the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers.
No nfl teams are playing today
The NFL started playing Thanksgiving games in 1920, the year the league begin.
That first year, three games were played:
1) Akron Pros 7, Canton Bulldogs 0
2) Decatur Staleys 6, Chicago Tigers 0
3) Dayton Triangles 28, Detroit Heralds 0
In addition, there were three teams that played non league games:
1) Elyria Athletics 0, Columbus Panhandles 0
2) Chicago Boosters 27, Hammond Pros 0
3) All Tonawanda 14, Rochester Jeffersons 3
Two NFL teams lost and the other tied.
Since their first Thanksgiving Day appearance on November 24, 1966, the Dallas Cowboys have played on the holiday every year with the exceptions of 1975 and 1977. The St. Louis Cardinals hosted the afternoon Thanksgiving game in those years.
The Miami Dolphins have made five appearances in Thanksgiving Day games on the home turf of the Dallas Cowboys. The most notorious contest was the "snow game" on Thursday, November 25, 1993, when the Cowboys apparently had held onto a 14-13 lead by blocking a Miami field goal in the final seconds. But the Dolphins gained second life when hard-luck Dallas defensive tackle Leon Lett touched the ball and made it live, enabling the Dolphins to recover it. Miami placekicker Pete Stoyanovich then kicked a 19-yard field goal, giving the Dolphins an unforgettable 16-14 win. Miami has a 3-and-2 record in the holiday contests. Here are the results (Miami victories in bold):
November 26, 1992. Legion Field, Birmingahm. Alabama won 17-0.
1934. The Lions have played every Thanksgiving since then, except during the World War II years (1939-1944).
They play on Thanksgiving because it was a tradition when the idea started. The Coyboys and Lions would always be the one's player and will always be at home. Also, if it changed fans would be disappointed in the lack of NFL tradition.
Although the Detroit Lions have played on Thanksgiving since the 1930s, their record for holiday games is 33-36-2. The Dallas Cowboys did not begin playing on Thanksgiving until 1966, but they are closing in on the Lions' win total. The Cowboys are 27-15-1 on Thanksgiving.
