Ever since the first movie was released, there's been a son in the book universe, but the first film's makers confirmed on the commentary track of the 1995 laserdisc and the 2003 DVD that the cub at the end of the film is Fluffy as in has no real name and no gender, resulting in its most official gender and real name to be the girl Kiara from the official movie sequel The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride. To the film itself they simply redesigned the cub and its ceremony. Doing that is called retroactive continuity which is very common in works of fictional series. But the sequel's makers did use "Fluffy" for baby Kiara in their official movie trailer--which was in order to make the point that in the movie universe the cub at the end of the first film is indeed Kiara and no one else.

The Lion King (the first movie in the series) is basically about a lion prince's ascension into his rightful role as the "Lion King". Mufasa, who at the time is the current lion king, tells his brother Scar about his new born son. Scar is mad because he wants to be king, but he cannot for as long as Mufasa and his son is alive. Then his lioness friend, Nala, finds him and tells him to come back cause he is the rightful king and their homeland is trashed by Scar and his minions. The ending consists of Simba fighting his uncle Scar, and though almost being killed, he manges to avenge his father's death by ultimately killing Scar and getting rid of his minions. Their homeland, in turn, goes back to being peaceful.
