The Simpsons were created in 1987 because Matt Groening was approached to create animated vignettes for FOX's Tracey Ullman Show.

Matt was known for his 5 year old comic strip 'Life In Hell' and he knew that FOX would own the characters so he created the Simpsons instead of giving up his 'Life In Hell' characters.

His quote: Matt Groening: I had been drawing my weekly comic strip, "Life in Hell," for about five years when I got a call from Jim Brooks, who was developing "The Tracey Ullman Show" for the brand-new Fox network. He wanted me to come in and pitch an idea for doing little cartoons on that show. The writing team comes up with a premise and the episode is assigned to a writer who writes it.

Oh, dude, Patty and Selma Simpson are like in their 40s or 50s, I think. I mean, they've been smoking for like forever, so who even knows how old they really are. But yeah, they're definitely not spring chickens, that's for sure.

Harry Shearer plays Ned Flanders, Rev. Lovejoy, Principal Skinner and scratchy the mouse among many others on the Simpsons. He is probably best known (at least with a cult following) as Derick Smalls in "This Is Spinal Tap".

There are widely differing estimates of the cost of nuclear power. The reason for this is not easy to understand, but the effects are. Severance, an expert on the economics of power generation with over thirty years experience, estimated the price of power is estimated at 25 to 30 cents per kWh in his paper "Business Risks and Costs of New Nuclear Power." Some other estimates are similarly high.

Part of the problem seems to be that there is a lot of industry self promotion going on, possibly from both proponents and adversaries, potential obscuring the facts. Another part of the problem is that there are a number of so called "hidden" subsidies provided to nuclear power plants that are often not included in the equations (examples being provisions of the Price Anderson Act, government loan guarantees, and government guarantees of waste disposal, all of which are costly or potentially costly to the taxpayer). And part of the problem is that obsolete data is widely available for use, and since change is so rapid, it can be very wrong even though it is only a few years old.
