The Solar System

Ever wondered if there is life on Mars? Or if Jupiter has five moons? Look no further; here is the category concerning all questions about our solar system and the known planets!

4,302 Questions

Do all of the rocky planets have oxygen?

No. Only Earth has a significant amount of oxygen. (I guess you mean oxygen as the gaseous element. Oxygen does occur on other planets in compounds like carbon dioxide.)

Is there life in any other planetary body in your solar system?

Mars had the possibilty of life thousands of years ago. The space probes spirit and opportunity browsed the surface of the crimson planet and found nearly indisputable evidence of water. Given that, and its ice caps, Mars is thought to have maybe harbored life many years ago.

However, as we can detect no traces of it today, Mars is no longer a candidate. Instead, Europa is what astronomers are placing their telescopic sets on today. (My apologies for the terrible pun.) It is thought to, under its thick ice surface, and above the volcanic vents of its core, contain a temperate underground ocean, which may or may not contain carnivorous, or otherwise, life.

The largest volcano in the solar system is located on this planet.?

Olympus Mons, which has a peak of 69,649 feet, is the largest volcano in the solar system. It is on the planet Mars.

How is solar system distance expressed?

Distances within the solar system are expressed in terms of the distance between the Earth ans the Sun. This distance is called an astronomical unit (abbreviated as au), a unit of length now defined as exactly 149,597,870,700 meters or 92,955,807.3 miles).

Did Galileo first propose a heliocentric model of the solar system?

No, it was Copernicus who proposed for the first time a complete model which had the Sun at the centre. At that time a 'model' was a geometrical construction that had the planets on small individual circular orbits (epicycles) that themselves travelled round on the main orbits, which were also circular.

Most of the planets had more than one epicycle to explain both the inclination of the orbit to the ecliptic and also the variation in distance from the Sun, which from the time of Kepler onwards was explained by the fact that the orbits were elliptical.

Galileo put forward the Copernican model, first as a teaching aid, and then later as the absolute truth, and this later step put him into conflict with the church authorities.

Kepler's model used the heliocentric concept but with elliptical orbits, and this was later demonstrated as the best model after scientific discoveries well after the time of Kepler and Galileo, by Newton, Laplace and others.

Where can I buy a belt conveyor system?

There are several different sites online where you can purchase a conveyor belt system. One such site is conveyorbelts.com. A wide selection is offered.

How does a pulsar affect the solar system?

Pulsars are stars which emit a large amount of electromagnetic radiation. Unfortunately, science has yet to determine how Pulsars affect our own solar system. They were first discovered in 1967, and since then many theories have been formulated regarding their affects, which include climatic changes upon planets and changes within nearby stars.

What planet is an anomaly?

Several of the planets could be considered anomalies.

Mercury is an anomaly because it has an abnormally large core in proportion to its size.

Venus is an anomaly because it rotates in the opposite direction from the other planets.

Earth is an anomaly because it has an abnormally large moon in porportion to its size.

Uranus is an anomaly because its rotational axis is at a nearly 90 degree angle to those of the other planets.

What is the angular size of the Sun and the Moon in order for solar eclipses to occur?

* For a solar eclipse, there is no specific requirement about the angular sizes.* For a TOTAL solar eclipse, the angular diameter of the Moon must be larger than that of the Sun.

What is a group of solar systems?

What is the fourth nearest star to our solar system?

Proxima Centauri is the closest star to our Sun, at 4.2 LY. Curiously, even though it is the closest, it is not visible to the naked eye! Proxima Centauri is a tiny red dwarf star, and requires a fair-sized telescope to see.

For a long time, many people thought that the closest star was Alpha Centauri, which isn't entirely incorrect. The Alpha Centauri system is actually a double star with a very distant triple; Alpha Centauri A (also known as Rigel Kent) and Alpha Centauri B form a binary system, and Proxima, Alpha Centauri C, is very distantly linked at about 0.3 LY.

Does it snow in outer space?

No. Snow is a result of moisture being carried up into the atmosphere by convection. There is no atmosphere, moisture, or convection in space to produce snow, though there are, no doubt, ice crystals broken off from comets.

Who or what studied Mars?

Christiaan Huygens is someone who studied Mars. He was a Dutch scientist and mathematician.
