What is tinnitus and how can it be prevented?
Tinnitus is a condition where the patient complains of a constant ringing noise in the ear even though there is no external source of noise. It can be caused when the ear is injured by a sudden loud noise, or it can be caused by a nerve disorder or even a structural anomaly within the ear. A CT scan may be used in a diagnosis.
Sometimes drugs may be used to try and alleviate this condition, but with limited success in many cases. One interesting treatment is where the audiologist plays various sounds to the patient in an attempt to mimic the sound the patient is hearing. When the sound has been duplicated, the patient listens to this sound over headphones for an extended period of time. Finally after a while, the headphones are removed and the patient's brain is fooled into thinking that the sound has disappeared now that the headphones are removed. The patient then no longer hears the noise at all. This doesn't work in every patient.
The tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) technique uses a combination of sound therapy and counselling to help people to cope better with their tinnitus.
TRT involves retraining the way that your brain responds to tinnitus sound so that you start to tune out of it and become less aware of it.http://tinnitus-treatment.yourhealthorbit.com/

Why does your glasswear make a ringing sound when tapped?
The ringing sound produced when glassware is tapped is due to its elastic properties and the way sound waves travel through the material. When struck, the glass vibrates, creating sound waves that resonate at specific frequencies. The clarity of the sound depends on the thickness, shape, and type of glass, with higher-quality glass typically producing a clearer, more sustained ring. This phenomenon is similar to how musical instruments produce sound, utilizing vibrations to create audible tones.

Can dirty ear drums can cause tinnitus?
Hi,
In my opinion, probably not. Tinnitus is usually related to some type of nerve activity either caused by damage to the inner ear or within the brain itself. I've dealt with Tinnitus for several years now and it's a real annoyance.
Better off seeing a specialist to get the cause diagnosed as there may be a treatment for your specific type of Tinnitus.
Hope this helps,
Cubby
Would ringing in the ear have anything to do with a pinched nerve or pain in the shoulders and neck?
No... The nerve for hearing runs inside the skull to the ears and the nerves to the neck and shoulders run completely outside of the skull... There are a lot of things that could cause the ringing of the ear...: previous nerve damage from listening to loud music/sounds over a long period of time [usually in both ears], repeated rupturing of the eardrum from infections/trauma, Meniere's Disease...
