Yes. Benjamin Guggenheim traveled with his French mistress, singer Leontine Aubert. During the sinking, it was Guggenheim that was thought to have said "we have dressed in our best and are prepared to go down like gentlemen." Aubert survived. Guggenheim did not.

The first class was people was almost entirely wealthy British passengers that were going on the Titanic there and back to England as a holiday cruise.

Second class were just the same but there were more american's who went to England to return on the Titanic's maiden voyage.

What most peope consider to be ironic is that someone wrote a book a few years earlier about a ship called the Titan- and what happened to it is exactly what happened to the Titanic.

Regulations at the time set the number and capacity of the lifeboats according to tonnage - not number of passengers - so as far as governments and authorities were concerned, Titanic was OK.

The owners thought that the full number of lifeboats would have made the ship ugly, cluttered.

The engineers meant that with the number of different "water proof" compartments, the ship would remain afloat long enough even in a bad accident for the boats they had to be able to ferry all passengers into safety.

There was a safety limit to how many lifeboats a ship could carry. Actually, the Titanic was carrying more lifeboats than it should have been, and there still weren't enough.

They removed some of the lifeboats because they thought it looked too cluttered and they thought that it was unsinkable so they didn't think that they would need them.

I have never heard this term. Offhand it sounds like a primitive system of passing buckets of water in a fire brigade- hence Bucket Brigade. a relay of bucket handlers at some point makes contact with a water source- hose or hydrant and passes it along to the fire-site. as said very primitive.

Most of the crew did not know what was happening. There was no communication between the boiler room (Where the iceberg did the damage) to the engine room. Also there was no alarm to tell the passengers there was a problem. So most of the passengers thought it was nothing more then a drill. I believe they found out it was not a drill when the crew lowered the life boats into the water.

Two reasons- she was travelling too fast at the time of the collision, largely at the behest of the White Star Line's owner Bruce Ismay, who was on board and wanted to finish off an otherwise perfect voyage by arriving in New York ahead of schedule. This meant that the lookouts had little time to spot the iceberg and telephone a warning to the bridge before the vessel hit it. Authoritative advice had counselled caution as Titanicapproached the ice-field, including Captain E.J.Smith, builder Jospeh Andrews and vessels in neighbouring shipping lanes, who radio'd in repeated warnings- however, Ismay overruled all of this and threw caution to the wind. The other reason was the fact that the iceberg was what is known as a 'black 'berg'- that is, an iceberg that has capsized so that it's comparatively translucent underside is topmost up, making it far harder to spot in the dead of night than ordinary icebergs. Added to that, there was no moon, and the sea was extremely calm, which meant that there was no wash visible around the base of the 'berg to reveal it's presence.

Hello, allow me to improve on this, unavailing answer. Unfortunately, no, John George Phillips did not survive the sinking. BUT there was a good reason. He heroically stayed to his post sending S.O.S and C.Q.D. messages until a few minutes before the ship went down. Hoped this helped! Well, at that time, the sewerage system had not yet been invented. For the royal family there were arrangements made though, they had special poop-chairs. It looked like chairs with a big hole in it, with a bucket underneath. For the rest of all the thousands inhabitants of Versailles, nothing was arranged. Most of them used buckets and emptied those on the courtyard. So, there are no toilets as we know them today in Versailles at all.

It took 2 hours and 40 minutes for the Titanic to sink, but the time it took for the bow and stern sections to hit the bottom of the ocean is still unknown
