No, children's toothpaste is not edible...if it contains fluoride and it will make you or a child very sick. "Toddler" toothpaste does not contain fluoride - so check the container if you are not sure which type of toothpaste is being questioned.

The U.S. poison control centers receive thousands of calls each year due to fluoride poisoning. Early symptoms include stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, fever and excessive saliva. In rare cases, cardiac failure can occur.

Most tubes of children's fluoride toothpaste made in the USA contain enough fluoride to severely poison a child who weighs up to 62 lbs. if the whole tube is ingested. The smaller the child the less toothpaste is needed to be toxic.

Excessive toothpaste use by children under the age of 8 can result in the development of fluorosis in the form of small white specks on the teeth or more severe discoloration and roughness. This damage is found on the child's permanent teeth.

Prevention:

Does Colgate toothpaste contains sodium lauryl sulfate?

According to this pdf from Colgate-Palmolive Australia, it appears that the Colgate range of toothpastes (some if not all) contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS).

SLS is a mild detergent and foaming agent that produces the foam when you brush your teeth.

It is generally believed to be safe to use although some studies have found that it can increase the frequency of oral ulcers (aphthous ulcer/canker sores) which are often mistaken for cold sores (herpes virus). These sores are quite common (15-30% of the population experience them) but unlike cold sores are not contagious. Their cause is unknown.

However, some studies have also found no relationship between SLS and the frequency of apthous ulcers.

How To Remove Burn Marks From a Kitchen Countertop?

Accidentally burning a kitchen countertop is never a fun experience, and the effects on the countertop can be very unappealing. Burn marks are also a little bit more difficult to deal with than spills or stains depending on the severity of the burn. However, there is fortunately a method that involves white toothpaste and Soft Scrub (Bleach) that will be sure to remove or at least greatly diminish the burn mark if it’s not too drastic.

Applying the Toothpaste

Cover the burn mark completely with tooth paste, and allow the application to stay on the burn for approximately 10 or 15 minutes. After the toothpaste has sat on the burn for several minutes, use an unused toothbrush to scrub the burn. After scrubbing the burn thoroughly, use a wetted cloth to wipe away the burnt residue and toothpaste. This process usually significantly improves the appearance of the burn and sometimes will completely remove the burn if it’s not deep.

Applying Soft Scrub

Soft Scrub (Bleach) will be needed for helping to improve the appearance of the burn if it still looks unpleasant after the toothpaste method. Apply the Soft Scrub to the burn site, and scrub again with the same toothbrush. A little bit of “elbow grease” will be required to achieve the full effect with the Soft Scrub. So, being quite forceful with the scrubbing will actually improve the results.

Purchasing a Special Burn or Stain Remover

If using Toothpaste and Soft Scrub on your kitchen countertop is not resolving the issue, turning to a specially made cleaner will probably do the trick. Products such as all purpose cleaners and Mr. Clean Magic Eraser will suffice in helping to remove the burn mark.

Sometimes, the burn can also be deep enough to where cleaning and treating will not help the situation out at all. In this case, not much else can be done besides either replacing the burnt section or covering the burn mark with an object.

How does toothpaste work?

Toothpaste serves three basic functions:

1. If it has fluoride, and most do, it serves to apply a small amount of decay-resistant fluoride to the surface of the teeth.

2. It contains a mild abrasive that 'scrubs' surface stains off the teeth.

3. It contains a breath freshener that temporarily masks bad breath.

Some toothpastes contain additional ingredients such as triclosan that seems to serve some benefit for those who have gingivitis.

My personal opinion: Toothpastes often can do more harm than good. How is that possible, you ask? Because of its breath freshening properties, toothpaste can make your mouth feel minty clean almost instantly - even if you have not brushed effectively. Consequently, many people do not brush long enough (min. 2-3 minutes) or effectively enough to prevent tooth decay or gingivitis.

The fact is, its the brush itself that does most of the work - when it is used effectively. Brushing without toothpaste along the gumline, brushing the tongue, and rinsing with plain water can do far more in preventing decay, preventing gingivitis, and eliminating bad breath than slapping a wad of minty goo around the mouth.

Here is a suggested strategy:

Brush your teeth, gums, and tongue with a soft bristled brush for at least two minutes with no toothpaste, or until your mouth really feels fresh and clean. Floss your teeth. Then brush your teeth for about one minute using a fluoride-containing toothpaste. Follow that up with your favorite mouthwash.

When toothpaste says it's whitening what ingredient makes it a whitening toothpaste?

well most "whitening" toothpaste only contains abrasives (usually little "bead" like thing) that get rid of surface stains, to actually get you teeth whitened you need a toothpaste with some kind of peroxide/bleach in it (when you get them profesionally whitened they use peroxide but at a much higher concentration than any whitening toothpaste might have)
