Train Travel

No. Not directly. If you were determined to catch a train from Cairns to Ayers Rock/Uluru, you would need to do the following:

• Catch the train from Cairns to Brisbane
• Continue on the train south to Sydney - part of the journey requires travelling by bus
• Catch the Indian Pacific train from Sydney to Adelaide
• Catch the Ghan from Adelaide to Alice Springs
• Catch a bus from Alice Springs to Ayers Rock

You can't; there is no subway service to LaGuardia. The only public transportation to LaGuardia is the M60 bus.

The M60 bus runs through Upper Manhattan only (via 106th and 125th Streets) so you'll have to take the subway. The simplest way to get to the M60 from Grand Central is to take the Uptown 4or 5 express trains (of the 4-5-6, the dark green line), 3 stops, from 42nd Street-Grand Central to 125th Street (at Lexington Avenue).

Then get the M60 bus at its 125th and Lexington stop.

Note that the M60 bus does not operate between 1 and 5 am.

Take the Downtown 4 or 5 express trains (of the 4-5-6, the dark green line), 2 stops, from 42nd Street-Grand Central Station to Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall.

You'll exit the subway at the corner of Chambers and Centre Streets, at the northeast corner of City Hall Park. Walk 3 blocks west on Chambers Street (across the park) to Church Street. Turn left onto Church Street, and walk 3 1/2 blocks south on Church Street to 100 Church Street, between Park Place and Barclay Street.

There are several ways to do this, but most of them require you to make 2 transfers. I will list all the options in Manhattan, even though some of them are similar, in the event that certain trains are out of service. For example, the L train and the 7 train are undergoing periodic trackwork right now and sometimes aren't running in Manhattan.

Free transfer is available between the 59th Street-Lexington Avenue Station on the 4-5-6 and the 63rd Street-Lexington Avenue Station on the F. This is a hassle, because you have to walk 4 blocks underground to transfer, and the transfer is only free if you pay with a plastic Metrocard (if you use paper Single Ride Tickets you have to pay 2 separate fares). But it's the only direct transfer between the 4-5-6 and the F.

There is another direct transfer, but only from the Downtown 6 (or the Downtown 4 late nights). Free transfer is available between the Broadway-Lafayette Station on the B-D-F-M, and the Bleeker Street Station on the Downtown 6 (not the Uptown 6). Since Bleeker Street is a local stop, you can't transfer from the 4 or 5 express trains, except late nights (1 to 5 AM), when the 4 runs local, in which case you can transfer from the Downtown 4.

You can also take the 4-5-6 to 42nd Street-Grand Central, transfer there to the Manhattan-bound 7 train, 1 stop, to 42nd Street-Bryant Park, and then transfer to the F at Bryant Park.

Or, you can take the 4-5-6 to 14th Street-Union Square, transfer there to the Manhattan-bound L train, 1 stop, to 6th Avenue-14th Street, and then transfer at 6th Avenue-14th Street to the F.

Or, you can take the 4-5-6 to 14th Street-Union Square, transfer there to the Uptown N-R-Q-W, take the N-R-Q-W to 34th Street-Herald Square, and transfer at Herald Square to the F.

Or, you can take the 4 or 5 (not the 6) to Fulton Street, transfer there to the Uptown 2, and take the Uptown 2 to 14th Street (at 7th Avenue). This station is connected to the 6th Avenue-14th Street Station. So you'd walk 1 avenue block east underground, then transfer to the F at 6th Avenue-14th Street.

Or, you can take the 4 or 5 (not the 6) to Fulton Street, transfer there to the Uptown A or C, take the A or C to West 4th Street, and transfer at West 4th to the F.

Or, you can take the 4 or 5 (not the 6) to Fulton Street, transfer there to the Uptown J-Z, take the J-Z to Delancey-Essex Street, and transfer at Delancey-Essex Street to the F.
