People say you need like around a 3.8 GPA at least a 1300 on your tests (ACT in 30's) and be very involved; lots of community service helps also. Family legacy used to count alot, but doesn't as much. However it still counts for something. Also, everyone thinks schools want to see a well-rounded student, which to some degree is true, but actually what is is more important is an "angular or pointed" student; meaning someone who shows genuine interest and passion for select activities. It doesn't mean as much if you're 101 activites just to fill up space on your application. The college only cares if you contributed to that club etc. otherwise it doesn't hold as much weight as you might expect. I toured USC and an admissions advisor spoke to my group saying even if you don't think there is a chance of you getting in, apply anyways, there are people who get in that have lower GPA's, grades aren't everything although they do help, obviously. If you don't get in you rfreshman year, it is definitely much easier to a junior college for 1 or 2 years get really good grades and then transfer, that way USC doesn't have to worry about the transfer GPA's affecting their average. Firstly, it's UC Berkeley (Public University) and then there's a different one called USC (University of Southern California) (Private University). Total costs at USC are roughly $51,968 (http://www.usc.edu/dept/publications/cat2008/tuition/). Basically, if you're a Californian born and bred then UC Berkeley seems the best choice simply because of the financial advantages. If not then the difference in cost doesn't seem to be all that substantial in which case USC is the better choice. USC is renowned for it's alumni network and the advantages that has for employment after University.

I am assuming that you are concerned with total cost, including room and board. If so, you can expect the sticker price to be in the low 50's. Don't be too shocked by that though, USC meets 100% of a student's demonstrated need and also offers scholarships for academically competitive individuals.

If you will be living off campus, you can expect to pay about $10,000 less to USC.

In state and out-of state tuition at USC is exactly the same since the school is private. Only public universities/colleges will have differing costs of attendance.

You do not have to have any community service hours to enter UCLA.. There are some scholarships that may require this but this is not part of their admission process.

If you want a top education and attend a private school USC is your choice. When you attend USC youre part of a true family. USC grads always look out for fellow USC grads. Ive seen it hundreds of times.. It seems like UCLA grads are like the red headed step child, if you get my meanig. ALL kiddiing aside, they are both good schools. The bottom line is that you will get as much from a school directly proportional to as much as you give. Ive always been partial to USC becasue it's private and not dependent on tax payers money...........and from my experience, if you live in So. Cal. it pays to have gone to USC.........Both schools are much better than any other schools out their with the exception of some of the Ivy league schools.
