US Banknotes

The Bureau of Engraving and Printing doesn't put counterstamps on banknotes so that city's name was added by someone with an office stamp or similar implement.

As such it's considered an altered bill so it's probably worth only face value to a banknote collector. The only exception might (emphasis "might") be if the bill is otherwise crisp and unfolded. In that case a buyer may be willing to downplay the damage somewhat.

However it's possible that the stamp was part of some promotional activity in Elkhart so it could be of interest to someone in that city. You might enquire at their Chamber of Commerce or library.

Despite its age, $1 silver certificates with that date are still quite common in collections. Your bill is worth maybe $1.25 to $1.50 if very worn, up to $3.00 if it's crisp and unfolded.

Most of the 16-sheet districts sell for about $170. The 'I', 'G' and 'J' districts are much higher, as there were fewer produced.

There wasn't a "P series" of 1953 US Notes - only plain, A, B, and C.

Depending on which you have, a circulated one could be worth about $2.50 for plain, A, or B, and $4-6 for a 1953-C bill.

The U.S. did not issue $5 silver certificates with that date. However at that time a lot of private banks were allowed to issue currency, so it's possible you have one of those notes. You'd need to find a dealer who specializes in obsolete currency and have your bill inspected in person.

As of 02/2010, retail values for circulated bills are as follows. The letter shown is the series letter, if any, that appears right next to the date, NOT either letter next to the serial number.

Before the 1980s, bills' dates were only changed when there was a significant design revision. The 1935 series was one of the longest-issued of any U.S. currency. Bills with that date were printed into the early 1960s, with only a series letter change to mark different Treasury Secretaries or Treasurers.

1935 : $4-$7 in circulated condition, $18 or more if uncirculated.

1935 A,B,C,D : $2.25-$3.00 / $13.00

1935 E,F : $1.50 / $7.00

1935 G w/out motto "In God We Trust" : $2.25-$3.00 / $10

1935 G w/ motto "In God We Trust" : $4-$6 / $18

1935H : $1.50 / $7.00

Special 1935 A bills were overprinted with HAWAII or NORTH AFRICA for use in those areas during WWII. The overprinting allowed them to be quickly devalued if they fell into enemy hands. These are more valuable:

That motto was only added to $1 bills starting in 1957, so it's perfectly normal for series A to early-G bills not to carry it.

It's normally not necessary to provide a bill's serial number. Serial numbers are counters and a security feature but rarely affect a bill's value. Some collectors will pay extra for numbers with a special pattern, e.g. 12345678, or low numbers such as 00000015.

These bills are normally called silver certificates rather than "paper silver dollars".

A date is needed to give a value - please check the date on the bill and post a new question "What is the value of a (date) US 1 dollar silver certificate?" for a specific answer.

Up till the mid-1960s it was possible to exchange silver certificates for $1 in silver metal, but that practice ended when the price of silver was deregulated.

If it has a D mintmark or no mintmark, it is about $1-10 depending on its condition. If there is an "S" mint mark on the front below Ike's head, then it worth more than that.

These dollars were made of copper and nickel, rather than silver, in most cases. If the "S" mark is there, check the sides of the coin--is it grey and copper, or darkish and lighter grey? If so, then it is likely 40% silver, and worth about $10 as of today.

It is impossible to say without knowing exactly what kind of "misprint" it has, and what condition the bill is in.

Despite the 1934 date, the "D" suffix indicates that your bill was printed during the Truman administration around 1950. In average circulated condition it might retail for around $7; if uncirculated, about $20.

As with any collectible, a primary consideration in determining its value is its condition (or grade). Novice collectors, with some practice, can become quite accurate in determining grades for circulated coins (G-4 through AU-50). It becomes much more difficult when assigning grades for Uncirculated coins (MS-60 through MS-70) or Proof coins (PF-60 through PF-70) and the assistance of an experienced coin collector or trusted coin dealer should be sought. Another consideration is whether the coin has a mintmark, indicating where the coin was made: D = Denver O = New Orleans S = San Francisco CC = Carson City Coins struck in Philadelphia generally do not bear a mintmark. There are other mintmarks, but the above list covers most. There are many Internet and printed resources in helping determine the appropriate grade for a coin. Whichever resource you choose to use, ensure that they follow the grading guidelines established by the American Numismatic Association (ANA). Post a new question with the coin's denomination. There may be a small D or S mint mark as well. If that's present, please include it in your posting.

It depends on the condition. Your note is probably a $5 note. They are worth $325 to $800 in circulated condition. In uncirculated condition they are worth $1,500 or more. This is a rare date for $5 notes.

It could also be a $1 note. They're more common than 1923 $5 notes; as of 12/2012 retail values are $6 to $35 in circulated condition. In uncirculated condition they are worth $60 or more.

The last silver certificates were $1 notes bearing the date and series 1957 B. Despite the date, they were actually issued until March 25, 1964 and bear the signature of C. Douglas Dillon.

Because of the rising price of silver, starting in 1963 dollar bills were issued as Federal Reserve Notes that did not require 1-for-1 backing with precious metal. The two series were briefly co-issued during that year.

Silver certificates are no longer redeemable for silver metal, and are treated exactly the same as Federal Reserve Notes.

The face on the $10.00 bill is John Trumbull's 1805 portrait of Alexander Hamilton that belongs to the portrait collection of New York City Hall.

The largest bank note the US ever printed was $100,000. It was intended for circulation between branches of the Federal Reserve and featured a picture of Woodrow Wilson.
