I believe usury means taking interest on money that is lent to someone. In the Islamic faith, this is not allowed, for many reasons and the profit from interest is money obtained by evil means. If you lend someone money you should only take back from that person what he borrowed and no more.
What were the three most task facing the Mormon pioneers once they reached the salt lake valley?
The most important task was getting fresh water. The Salt Lake Valley is very dry and has very little fresh water. Irrigation ditches were dug from mountain streams to water crops and provide something to drink for the people and livestock.
The second most important task was getting seeds planted. The pioneers arrived in late July, and the freeze could come as early as September in that region. They needed to get some crops growing quickly so that they could have food for themselves and feed for the livestock. Of course, they couldn't plant crops without the irrigation!
The third most important task was building shelters. Although July is very warm and camping out is bearable, the weather can turn cold very quickly and they needed to build as many homes as possible before the winter came. Although the pioneers worked very quickly on this, many families had to share small cabins and dugouts that first winter, with 20 or so people in a space no larger than the average bedroom of today!

Did the Mormons have to pay for Utah?
No. When the Mormons first arrived in 1847, Utah was a part of Mexico, however only a year later Utah became a part of the United States as part of the Mexican American War. The United States actually encouraged people to move west so that they could cover and defend their vast land area. Utah was considered "uninhabitable" by many, but the US government didn't mind the Mormons attempting to settle the land - it meant there was an American presence in a place that their otherwise wouldn't be.
In 1887-1890, the United States government siezed all properties owned by the Mormon Church valued over $50,000. However, most of the land in Utah was owned by individuals and not the Church itself. The Church did not have to buy back their land, it was given back when they agreed to certain legal requirements imposed upon them by the government.
The Mormons and the Mormon church were able to aquire the land from the government for free, which was common practice for all western settlers at the time, but they did and do have to pay property taxes on the value of the land, based on the government's appraisal. Once Utah became an official territory and state of the United States, the land came under government control, and the government had the right to sell or give away the land as they pleased.
Additionally, the Mormons never owned nor sought to own Utah as a political entity (i.e. buying ownership of Utah, its assets, and it's government so as to declare it independent of the United States), only to own, develop, and live on the land in the region.

What is the Utah economy like?
I have lived in Utah for 16 years. Here are some facts: Hourly pay in Utah is low compared to other states. You are lucky to get a job that pays 10-13 per hour even with a college degree. Some people may fare better, but that's not the norm. Housing prices are still VERY inflated, especially in relation to the low wages. You can buy an "average" 3 bedroom home for about 230K. Renting a 3 bedroom home will cost at least 1200 per month. Even a two bedroom rental is about 800 per month. Utah has a very high tax burden....food is taxed (yes, sales tax on groceries!) and our gas is triple taxed. The cost of living is VERY high here, and with the meager amount that is left once state and federal costs are taken, it is a challenge to support a family. Part time lower paying jobs are quite plentiful here, probably more plentiful than in many parts of the country right now. Many people have 2, 3 even 4 part time jobs just to make ends meet. Utah is a "at will" employment state. Any employer can fire you, with out cause, at any time. Many employers do not offer any health insurance, or if they do, its expensive. With all of the part time workers, it is common here to not have insurance. Utah is not a "welfare state", and Federal and state programs can only help the poorest of the poor here, and unless you are living in a box on the side walk, you will probably not qualify for assistance of any kind. Despite the gloomy picture, many who live here still love it...there is so much scenic beauty to enjoy, and communities tend to be friendly. Oh and just in case you were wondering, crime is NOT lower here, and schools are NOT better...our schools are the among most under-funded and the worst performing in the nation :( Sad but true.
