Amazingly at the age of thirteen he joined the navy as James Cook's midshipman on his second voyage. The job was secured by his father. Body George Vancouver was born in Lings Lynn, England on June, 22, 1757. Kings Lynn was a busy sea port; his father was able to secure the job as midshipman aboard the H.M.S Resolution James Cooks ship during his second voyage. When he returned to England he was placed as lieutenant aboard the H.M.S Fame. Prior to that he served in a West Indies station to survey Kingston harbor and Port Royal. In seventeen eighty-nine the royal navy was planning a voyage to survey the south pacific whaling grounds and also to take back Nookta Sound. The expedition was led by Vancouver in command. The expedition left England with two ships in April of 1791. The expeditions first year they visited Cape Town, Australia, Tahiti, and China, from every destination they collected botanical samples, and survey the land. He went along to North America. There he encountered American captain Robert Gray going up the Columbia River. Vancouver kept traveling north to the Strait of San Fuca. He ordered his men to survey all around them up to the frigid waters of Alaska. Most of that work was done in small sail boats or row boats. The first European to enter the Burrard Inlet was George Vancouver. He named it after his friend sir harry burrard. In addition he surveyed the Howe inlet and the Jarvis sound. On George Vancouver's thirty-fifth birthday they unexpectedly met a Spanish expedition, Cayetano Flores. They explored the Georgia Strait and Discovery Islands for three weeks before parting. When the surveying season ended they returned to Nookta. The Spanish were also there too. Cuarda and Vancouver exchanged maps. They decided to wait for further instructions of what to do. So for the time they called it Cuarda y Vancouver Island. Later the name was shortened to Vancouver Island. He returned to England in 1795. He had made a circumnavigation. When he returned to England he faced difficulties. He died in 1798 at the age of 40. There are many memorials of George Vancouver today. Two cities are named after him. There are statues of him in Kings Lynn and Vancouver, Canada. Although he was assaulted in the street, embarrassed by a news paper and had mutiny plotted against him people appreciate him now.
