Veterans Day Holiday

War War 1 ended on the eleventh minute of the eleventh hour of the eleventh day or the eleventh month. Now, the 11th day of November is set aside to honor those who have served, and too often died, for their country. Originally called Armistice Day, that day is now called Veteran's Day. Why do you celebrate armistice day?

People celebrate armistice day because it was the day that world war 1 was declared over. It is also celebrated to honor people who fought in all wars and conflicts. We celebrate it to honor veterans who have served and died for us in war.

What freedoms do we have to day because of our veterans?

Reguardless of what nationalists and patriaots say it is entirely speculative what rights we would and wouldn't have today as a result of our veterans because it is not possible to predict what would have happened differently. If no one who was a veteran had gone to war during WWII for example and the US remained isolationist you cannot say that Americans would automatically not have rights and freedom just because no one went to fight in Europe. The coarse of history would be so altered we cannot say what would and wouldn't happen because of it.

Why are poppies often sold to raise money for veterans and their windows on Veterans Day?

Poppies grew wild in the fields in Flanders, where many of the battles of World War 1 took place. They particularly proliferated after the battles were over, the soil churned up, and the area fertilised with the blood of thousands. For this reason they are a significant link with war veterans. It is fitting that they be sold to raise funds for the veterans of any conflict, or their widows, who need help.

See the related link which contains the poem "In Flanders Field", highlighting the significance of these battlefields.

How can you honor veterans other than to celebrate Veterans Day?

Honoring Veterans

Usually when you exit a supermarket, card store, or mall there are some Veterans with a can of dollars. The dollars go to their Association and in return, you get a red "poppy" flower. By donating a dollar, you can honor a veteran.

Just walk up to one who you know is a veteran, shake his hand and say Thank You.

.....

I am a veteran. If you want to honor me, pay your taxes without complaining about it. The military and vets programs run on big piles of tax money; if you don't pay your taxes, you hurt the troops and the vets.

Why do you celebrate Veterans Day?

To admire Veterans who served in the United States military, even if they were not in war, why admire the people who do not go to war? you ask. We admire them because they are taking time out of their life, to go serve our country.
