What does the Immaculate Conception have to do with the South of France?

Roman Catholic AnswerOur Blessed Lady appeared in Lourdes, France and announced herself as the "Immaculate Conception".

The Immaculate Conception has been believed by the Church since very early on, the fact that when Our Blessed Lady was conceived in the womb of her mother, Anne, she was preserved from any stain of original sin. This, in the words of Pope Pius IX, "The most holy Virgin Mary, was, in the first moment of her conception, by a unique gift of grace and privilege of Almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ the Redeemer of mankind, preserved free from all stain of original sin." This freedom from sin was entirely unmerited on her part, and a special grace, and exception to the natural law, given to her so that she would be a worthy mother to the Son of God. Pope Pius IX proclaimed this solemnly in 1854; four years later Our Blessed Lady appeared at Lourdes and announced that she was the Immaculate Conception.

When is the Ascension of Mary celebrated?

There is no such thing as the Ascension of Mary, only God, Himself, in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ, ever ascended into heaven. Our Blessed Lady is only a creature, and incapable of such a thing. The Assumption of Mary is on the 15 of August each year. Ascension and Assumption are very different things.

How does an Episcopalian view the Virgin Mary?

An episcopalian, being an Anglican, adheres to the 39 Articles of faith as set down when the Church of England (the original Anglican Church) was formed in the 1500s. In Article 22 it states: "The Romish Doctrine concerning Purgatory, Pardons, Worshipping and Adoration, as well of Images as of Relics, and also Invocation of Saints, is a fond thing, vainly invented, and grounded upon no warranty of Scripture, but rather repugnant to the Word of God." In other words, praying to saints is a real no-no. Although there are some within the Anglican Church who still think in the old 'Catholic' way, the vast majority of the Anglican Church regards Mary as worthy of some respect, but refuses to believe in her as some form of intercessor or 'go-between' in prayer as the Catholics do, as praying to saints is forbidden by this article. Furthermore, whilst in the more Catholic wing of the Anglican Church you may still find the occasional statue of Mary, and small chapels within churches dedicated to her, most of these are relics from before the Anglican church was formed. And in no way would an Anglican venerate (or is it almost worship?) Mary in the same way as a Roman Catholic would.

Who was the Virgin Mary raised by?

Mary was born to Joakim or Joaquin (depending on dialect) and Anne. She was born into and raised by Jewish parents.

Anglo catholic anglicans believe she remained a virgin her whole life (as do Roman Catholic and Orthodox Christians).

Why did the Virgin Mary appear at Lourdes and not Paris?

AnswerThroughout the past 2,000 years of history, Our Blessed Lady has appeared numerous times, with the same message every time: that people need to repent of their sins, believe in her Son, pray, and reform their lives. When Our Blessed Lady does appear, it is used to an innocent who has, as yet, been untouched by the "world, the flesh, and the Devil." Lourdes was one of these incidents. At Lourdes, Our Blessed Lady appeared to Marie-Bernarde Soubirous, a young French girl, who later became a religious sister. One of the outstanding differences with her appearance at Lourdes were the spring, which was not there before, and the healing miracles which have occurred there right from the beginning.Because of these miracles, people continue to pilgrimage to Lourdes and pray for the Virgins intercession. There have been uncounted miracles at Lourdes over the years. For the most part these are miracles which cannot be seen - spiritual and mental healings. However, the most amazing part, since the very beginning, has been the physical healings, of which there have been literally thousands. Because of skeptics and others who are wont to disparage this, the Church has been very cautious about proclaiming real miracles, and the unbelievable strictness of the requirements for a "complete physical healing miracle" mean that very few are actually accounted miracles on the Church's official lists: for the miracle to be recorded by the Church, it must be completely unexpected, the patient must be taking no medications or other treatments which might have effected the cure; the cure must be total and lasting, and totally unexplainable. Of the nearly 7,000 recorded miracles, only 67 have been validated as meeting all of the Vatican's stringent requirements. (See the third link at the bottom) But if you talk to any serious pilgrim who has gone to Lourdes with a real problem for healing, 90% of the time they will tell you that, for them, they had a real healing somehow. The 67 cases are indications beyond any possible skeptic, proving that Our Blessed Lady is indeed praying to God to work these miracles, and everyone who has gone and asked God for healing is touched in some way. Some of the cures have been inexplicitly worked on non-believers who weren't even aware of where they were.

Where were people baptised in old days?

Roman Catholic AnswerThat depends on how "old" you want to get. Originally, Jesus was baptized in the Jordon river. We know that the apostles baptized, and they baptized people where they found them, so they could not all have been in the Jordon river. They were no doubt baptized in the town where they were converted, wherever the Mass and other religious services where held. Since the establishment of Churches - which would have been after the Christians came out of the catacombs in the 4th century, they have used dedicated baptismal fonts in their Churches.

What is the doctrine that states that Mary was preserved from Original Sin?

Immaculate Conception. Title of the Blessed Virgin as sinless from her first moment of existence. In the words of Pope Pius IX's solemn definition, made in 1864, "The most holy Virgin Mary was, in the first moment of her conception, by a unique gift of grace and privilege of almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ the Redeemer of mankind, preserved free from all stain of original sin." This means that since the first moment of her human existence the mother of Jesus was preserved from the common defect of estrangement from God, which humanity in general inherits from the sin of Adam. Her freedom from sin was an unmerited gift of God or special grace, and an exception to the law, or privilege, which no other created person has received.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

She WAS the Immaculate Conception, Born of Ann who prayed for a child for many years and was classed as barren. The lord, deemed her holy and worthy and free from sin, answered her prayers and she fell pregnant with Mary. She was born pure, and free of sin and full of grace.

Roman Catholic Answer

You can not use the Bible to refute truths of the Catholic faith. The Bible was written, compiled, and guarded by the Catholic Church for 1,500 years to help It teach the truth to men. Christianity IS NOT Bible based, the Bible is based on the Church. The Church has taught that Mary was conceived without sin (the Immaculate Conception), lived her entire life without committing sin, ended her life without ever having committed sin. This has been the teaching of the Church since the very beginning, and taught. If you read Luke 1:26-28, you find Mary called "full of grace" (or highly favored in some protestant translations). The word used here is kecharitomene, which is the perfect passive participle of "charitoo" which means "endowed with grace." Charis (the Greek word for grace) is translated in the KJV as "grace" 129 times out of about 150 appearances. This passage teaches the sinlessness of Mary - itself the root assumption of the developed doctrine of the Immaculate Conception. extracted from Bible Proofs for Catholic Truths by Dave Armstrong, Sophia Institute Press, Manchester, NH, 2009
