Vlad III the Impaler

Vlad III of Wallachia (more commonly known as "Vlad the Impaler" or "Vlad III Dracula") was the Prince of Wallachia who reigned from 1456 to 1462. Historically, Vlad III is most famous for resisting the expansion of the Ottoman Empire and for his unusually sadistic forms of punishment, impaling with a wooden stake through the abdomen as the most highlighted method. He is also believed to have inspired the name for Count Dracula in Bram Stoker's 1897 novel.

He was a very cruel despotic monarch, and he had crazy methods to rule his country. One of his anecdotes is the following;

Dracula once noticed a man working in the fields while wearing too short a caftan. The prince stopped and asked the man whether or not he had a wife. When the man answered in the affirmative, Dracula had the woman brought before him and asked her how she spent her days. The poor, frightened woman stated that she spent her days washing, baking and sewing. The prince pointed out her husband's short caftan as evidence of her laziness and dishonesty and ordered her impaled despite her husband's objection that he was well satisfied with his wife. Dracula then ordered another woman to marry the peasant but admonished her to work hard or suffer her predecessor's fate.

Vlad the Impaler is a character that many historians talk about. Vlad was really called Vlad Dracula. A writer need a name for a vampire in his story and took the name Dracula. It is unconfirmed that he was a real vampire, but if you asked someone from Romania about Vlad, they will say how he saved them and all that stuff, nothing about a vampire!

He was Prince Vlad of Wallachia, which is now Romania!!!

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Yes, Vlad Tepes was very well educated. In the early years of childhood, the future ruling prince Vlad the Impaler got a distinguished education, and mastered German and Latin. During the first reign of Vlad II, Vlad the Impaler accompanied his father to Targoviste - capital of Wallachia at that time.

The Byzantine chancellor Mikhail Doukas showed that, at Targoviste, the sons of boyars and ruling princes got a distinguished education from either Romanian or Greek scholars, coming from Constantinople. The young prince learned for sure; combat skills, geography, mathematics, science, language; Romanian, Latin, Bulgarian (church Slavic) and the classical arts and philosophy.

His early education was left in the hands of his mother, a Transylvanian noblewoman, and her family. His real education began in 1436 after his father succeeded in claiming the Wallachian throne by killing his Danesti rival. His training was typical to that of the sons of nobility throughout Europe. His first tutor in his apprenticeship to knighthood was an elderly boyar who had fought against the Turks at the battle of Nicolopolis. Vlad learned all the skills of war and peace that were deemed necessary for a Christian knight.
