We flew from Vancouver to Auckland and it took us approximately 12 -13 hours (yours would be a little further). I believe you would have to change flights in Auckland to fly down to Wellington. We took a senic train from Auckland to Wellington and it was very nice - it was about 8 hours though. But you got to see so much more than flying.
If this is your first trip you really need to take a trip to the south island - picture postcard beautiful!
It was originally Kororareka (Russell) in the Bay of Islands - Where the first main European settlement was.
It was moved to Auckland as this was a growing European settlement (the largest at the time) so better to serve a greater population.
With continued migration, it was shifted to Wellington so that it was more central to the whole country.

I don't think this will accomplish major stretch-age, but I found that just wearing my new rubber wellingtons around the house with a pair of thick socks for a few hours comfortably stretched them a bit so they aren't tight around my calves. After taking them off for awhile, and putting them back on, the stretch seems to have held.

An eponym is when someone gives their name to something else. So, like , 'The Duke of Wellington' gave his name to wellington boots. It's a little bit like the Roman's gave their names to the months on the calendar we use today, for example: Augustus Caesar gave his name to our month 'August'.
I hope I've helped! :)
