How is WikiAnswers different from Wikipedia?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Definitely! ;-) Amazon.com's Askville is another great new question and answer website. They did a very good job on it. Askville, Yahoo Answers, MSN Live, and many of the other new Q&A sites are essentially what FAQ Farm was in 2002. They're Q&A bulletin boards. (Albiet, much more professional, well-financed versions.) On other sites, the same questions get asked over and over again. People post individual answers and those answers can never be improved upon. It's one-on-one, isolated communication. The important aspect of people helping each other by asking and answering questions is there with all the sites. FAQ Farm also goes a step further. Our community is actually growing FAQs. We're creating permanent Q&A resources for the world to use, as opposed to just offering a forum for Q&A.

Is this site with Wikipedia?

No, it isn't the same. The two sites have nothing to do with each other, actually, other than both using the word "Wiki." That indicates that we are based on user content, not that we are part of Wikipedia.

Can people trust Wikipedia?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I tell students that it is a good place to start but you better find a back-up source

A:

Although WikiAnswers is fortunate enough to have professionals that may supervise or simply contribute to the site along with individuals that may have acquired specific knowledge that enables them to accurately answer questions asked, it is open to anyone that wishes to participate. Therefor a wide array of people use and contribute to the site which allows for some mischief to exist such as changing the wording of answers of even making them misleading. Not too much is set in stone as the absolute final answer, thus making it the falable and jewel of a site that it is.

Is it true that a gamma ray primarily consists of pure energy and no mass?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

A gamma ray is an electromagnetic wave, as is light. This makes it similar to light. You might say it is "pure energy". But please note that any energy has an associated mass, which can be calculated by dividing the energy by c2.

Why do people say not to use Wikipedia?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It is a good idea to use these for research. However, you shouldn't rely on either as the be-all-and-end-all of information, without searching other sites and maybe even cracking a book or two.

I think the reason someone may have told you it was a bad idea is that on either site, you may encounter opinion, rather than fact. I think, however, it would be better to say that you should not rely on any one source of information while conducting research. You should always seek corroborating information, no matter if you use books, websites, or whatever, before reaching a decision as to what is accurate.
It is not good because, people post things on that website that may not be true, like this website. Everything people post may not be true.

Are there free online 3D MMORPGS?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

RuneScape is fun, and you don't have to download anything. (http://runescape.com/)

Also, there's MapleStory, which is kind of a rip-off of Ragnarok Online, but it's not 3D... (http://www.mapleglobal.com/)

-There is also Pirate Galaxy, which is a pretty good browser game. It has gorgeous graphics, and has a very friendly community.

MoreAnarchy Online is a MMORPG with a Science Fiction theme that can be downloaded and played for free. They say that it is a one-year free trial, but it gets renewed every year, and has renewed like that for several years. You can't access all of the features, but it is still fun even if you stay with the free-only content. They can afford to do this, because for free subscribers there are ads in game ... on the walls that you run past and things like that. It isn't too invasive, and it is enjoyable.

Guild Wars isn't free to buy, but it doesn't require a monthly fee, so it is only that one-time cost. If you want to get expansions it costs more, but if you stick with the original game, it will always only be that one cost.

AnswerThere's also Fly For Fun, Rakion Chaos Force, and Silkroad Online, all three are fully functional as free games, and you can earn items in the games themselves, but if you don't want to do that, you can buy them with real money (this is where the developers make revenue), although you don't have to and most can be acquired in the games.

Why is there a Wiki Q and A and Wikipedia?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

WikiAnswers is called a "Wiki" because we are based on the Wiki format - allow anybody, anywhere, to edit the site.

Answer:

According to Ward Cunningham the developer of the first Wiki web:

"Wiki wiki is the first Hawai'ian term I learned on my first visit to the islands. The airport counter agent directed me to take the wiki wiki bus between terminals. I said what? He explained that wiki wiki meant quick. I was to find the quick bus. I did pick up a book about the language before my return home. I learned many things from this but wiki wiki is the word that sticks the most. "

"I thought "wiki wiki web" was more fun to say than "quick web", no mater what pronunciation is used. The name "quick web" would have been appropriate for a system that makes web pages quickly. Microsoft's "quick basic" was a precedent for such a name. I chose to call the technology WikiWikiWeb. I used exactly this spacing and capitalization because the technology would then recognize the term as a hyperlink. I name shows up in the URL for the site (http://c2.com/cgi/wiki) which surely encouraged people to abbreviate likewise."
