What could prevent the hard drive from loading Windows 98SE when attempting to reinstall it?

Preparing a Hard drive for Windows 98Usually, the problem is with the state of the hard drive at the time of the istallation. There are two utilities included on the 'Windows Start Up Disk', one of which is 'fdisk', and the other is 'format.' These utilities must be used in the proper order to insure that the disk is ready for the Widows installation.

First, from the DOS prompt A:\ type in 'fdisk'. Then, select the appropriate option to create a partition on the hard drive. (Note: Any data currently on the hard drive will be lost! Be sure to back up all data prior to re-installing Windows!) I recommend creating at least two partitions, one being for the operating system, and the other being a virtual disk to store software, documents, and anything elese that is important. I suggest assigning one third of the disk to the operating system, which is usually on the drive designated as 'c', and the the rest of the drive to one or more virtual disks. This protects your critical data if the operating system is compromised. The partition to be used for the operating system (Windows) must be made active prior to leaving the fdisk program. The computer should be re-booted upon exiting fdisk, to insure that the changes are properly made.

After rebooting, again from the DOS prompt A:\, type 'format c:'. You will be asked if you are sure you want to do this, because, again, any data on the specified drive will be lost. After c drive is formatted, format any virtual drives which you have created. This should prepare the hard disk drive for installing Windows 98. Be aware that Windows 98 has a minimum space requirement, which, if not met, will prevent Windows from installing.

It's usually a short cut to the system operations. Open, rename, edit, properties... all of which can be accessed in the program itself. Just an easier way to get there.

How do you downgrade from Windows XP Home Edition to Windows 98 SE?

If you installed Windows XP in this method you can downgrade. That is, if you upgraded Windows XP from Windows 98 SE means you can downgrade Windows XP by removing Windows XP in Control panel, Add/Remove programs. Then the first Operating System (windows 98Se) will come.

I've had to do this many times at my work. The best way is to boot with a 98 bootdisk then use fdisk to wipe the hard drive. Then restart the machine with the bootdisk and 98 CD in it. Choose the option to run setup from the CD and then follow the instructions. Setup will format the hardrive and then restart to begin installing the OS.

Why in the world would you want to install 98. Microsoft no longer provides support for 98 and XP SP2 is far superior to 98 in the first place. It is a no brainer. Keep XP SP2 and forget the archaic 98.

What are the similarities and differences in windows?

Why does Windows 98 use FAT32 while Windows XP uses NTFS?

NTFS is a journaling file system, designed primarily for scalability and security. FAT32 is used in Windows 98 because Windows 98 requires MS-DOS to boot, and it would have been very difficult to port MS-DOS to boot off of an NTFS partition.

Also, FAT32 has better performance on older computers and smaller hard drives. By the time Windows XP came out, computers were more powerful, and NTFS would actually perform better than FAT32 on the hard drives that were available by this time.

Do you have to format a hard drive before installing Windows 98?

Can you reformate a Dell with Windows ML to Windows XP Home?

I am going to assume you meant Windows ME to WIndows XP Home ED? One thing I HIGHLY suggest doing is perform a low level format because if you try and upgrade from Windows ME to Windows XP you are going to have some serious .dll issues and all kinds of errors. Windows ME was not a stable OS and Microsoft admitted to that, this is why people choose not to run Windows ME. Research the web if you do not know how to perform a low level format on your hard drive

What makes a computer recognize ram?

A Windows computer will recognize more ram if you throw it out your window and buy a mac instead (really it's a good choice) many computers will actually recognize the new ram instantly and if it hasn't you can try reinstalling it. If that doesn't work you can hunt through settings to look for something to do with RAM and it might have a setting you can change.

Just experiment with the keys until you get to the BIOS.
