The story of Wolverine joining the x-men in the movies is not true. It was just made up for the movie. Here is the short answer:
Wolverine joined the X-Men after he appeared in Giant size X-men #1 in May 1975
Long answer: Wolverine first appeared in the last panel of The Incredible Hulk #180 (his first full appearance is in issue #181, November 1974) and was created by writer Len Wein and Marvel art director John Romita, Sr., who designed the character, and was first drawn for publication by Herb Trimpe. Wolverine later joined the X-Men's "All New, All Different" roster in Giant-Size X-Men #1 (May 1975). X-Men writer Chris Claremont played a significant role in the character's subsequent development, along with artist/writer John Byrne, who insisted on making the character older than the other X-Men. Artist Frank Miller collaborated with Claremont and helped to revise the character with a four-part eponymous limited series from September to December 1982 in which Wolverine's catchphrase, "I'm the best there is at what I do, but what I do best isn't very nice," debuted. Wolverine was typical of the many tough anti-authority antiheroes that emerged in American popular culture after the Vietnam War; his willingness to use deadly force and his brooding nature became standard characteristics for comic book anti-heroes by the end of the 1980s. As a result, the character became the clear favorite for fans of the increasingly popular X-Men franchise.
Wolverine is "the best there is'.. at what he does but as he will tell you; "What I do ain't very nice." Wolverine first appeared in The Incredible Hulk number 180 in October of 1984 and was created by Len Wein who was writing The Incredible Hulk at that time. Wolverine later joined the X-men first debuting with that merry band of mutants in Giant Sized X-Men number 1 and it was the famous teaming of John Byrne and Chris Claremont who carefully and meticulously crafted one of comic books most beloved and popular characters. John Byrne had insisted on making Wolverine much older than the rest of the X-Men roster and while a mutant like the others his age and "bezerker rage" made him distinctly different from all the others.
More commonly known amongst his peers as Logan, Wolverine came to typify the comic book anti hero of comic books that found its footing in the 80's. Since Logan joined the X-Men he has been central to every title and has carried his own solo title since 1988. The feral mutant has the ability to heal at a very rapid rate and is nearly indestructible. Especially since his association with the Weapon X program which is a sort of super solider program that applied adamantium metal to his bone structure which makes Logan pretty much unbreakable. He possesses the razor sharp senses of an animal and that combined with his razor sharp adamantium retractable claws makes him a formidable opponent.
What would win in a fight a 90 lb pit bull or a wolverine?
A Pitbull would win because they have locked jaw and they drag their victims by the neck. well Wolfs are good fighters but they wont be a match for Pit's.
Pits were born to fight and take down animals that's in their blood.
What is the meaning of mutant?
Worldwide millions exist on a daily basis. For the human species assume that one mutant is created every minute (and that is a very low estimate), and assume that nine out of ten fail to survive from birth to adulthood, and assume that only ten percent of that genetic change is passed on to the next generation, and only one percent of those survive to pass on that mutation, and only one percent of those......yes, every day you live, you walk past a mutant and certainly every human that you meet today is a mutant of some kind, and so are you, or your spouse, or your children, or your grandchilderen of their great-great-great -great grandchildren. They walk among us. If mutation failed to exist, man could not exist.

Who would win in a fight gambit or wolverine?
Wolverine vs. Hulk - Wolverine has defeated Hulk numerous times. Wolverine defeated Hulk for a 5th time in the Canadian Rockies when the Green and Grey Hulk attacked him. Wolverine was smashed through four rock quarries but eventually came to and slashed both Hulk's sides open. Once they were in a state to heal giving chase to Logan - he double backed on the monsters and slit their Achilles heels, dropping them to their feet - where he slit their throats and started taking green brain chunks out of both of them. Logan felt bad enough where he took the Banner twins to the nearby Alberta Hospital.Reconstructive surgery was needed for both Hulks' faces!
Wolverine vs. Juggernaut - Juggernaut beat the crap out of Wolvie, but Wolverine finally popped the top off Caine Marko's helmet. The god of Cytorrek did little to deter Woverine. He stabbed Juggernaut so many times, his brain healed incorrectly - and when it did he became mentally handicapped until Professor X healed him indefinitely.
Wolverine vs. Sabretooth - It was a quick brawl, Sabretooth underestimated Logan and he shredded Sabretooth's face off, popping 3 claws into his brain, decimating his neural system. Thus, Victor Creed was paralyzed indefinitely.
Wolverine vs. Apocalypse - Apocalypse's powers easily destroyed Wolverine with the same tenacity he had fighting the Phoenix. But Jean Grey was forgiving and saved Logan before he perished in flames. Apocalypse kept destroying wolverine's exterior until his skeleton and few flesh chunks were abundant. Wolverine was saught to be dead and the Reavers and Hellions went to lay waste with his body in lye. With no pulse, Wolverine ressurrected from the dead, killed the Reavers and Hellions - fatally wounded the White Queen after she completely shredded his already deteriorated brain particles. Completely clueless of what had happened to him, after cutting Emma Frost's ribcage open - he came to fight Apocalypse and this time was too fast for the demi-god. Apocalypse blasted him with all he had but Wolverine was too swift and stuck his claws into the weak spot on En Saba Nur's back. Apocalypse grew to full size, but eventually fell to pieces, as Wolverine just kept shredding his metallic parts like he did to the Sentinals he mangled on 5TH Avenue. After he destroyed Apocalypse - he ran into Mastermold and dug his way into the robot all the way to it's cerebrum - where he shredded Mastermold to pieces. After killing Mastermold like a computer shredder - he ended up destroying 50 more sentinals and Nimrods - eventually killing Fitzroy whom could not deter Wolverine's beastial savvy over him. After killing Nimrod after blow for blow - he finally ended up meeting with Bishop. Only problem - he had ended up into the future with Bishop (Whom he kicked the crap out of upon first meeting him thinking he was an assassin)
Wolverine vs. Superman - The biggest battle in history but not quaint. Wolverine was outmatched like any other human being. Only problem, he had to dodge the man of steel and fight like he had the Punisher, Ghost Rider, and Johnny Blaze beforehand. He had to take the power blasts like a man, and push back. That is how he got past the weapons and gadgets of punisher as well as Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze, and even Spiderman. The fighters were too fast and agile for him - but Wolverine always had a fighting ace up his sleeve - animal instincts. Spiderman and the Scarlet Spider like Punisher tried to double back with their agility/size to fight Wolvie. But Wolverine ended up back flipping behind them and choking them out indecreetly. Punisher was knocked senseless, Spiderman snapped free but had a fractured neck from Logan's pressure hold on his vertebrae - and The Scarlet Spider was beaten to a pulp because he couldn't seem to hit Logan hard enough to deter him. Ghost Rider and Johnny Blaze were just beaten plain senseless (The hellfire was not doing anything to Logan) - but because Blaze and Ghost Rider also had Morbius and The Silver Samuraii on their team.... (whom all 4 beings used their powers but Wolverine got thru them anyways) and slashed them to the point of flatlining...... Allot of blood was lost - no pun intended. The Silver Samuraii lay for dead, while Blaze and Ghost Rider were fading out of lifeforce. Suddenly, tons of demons including Lilith and the Goblin Queen were getting intensely mauled by Wolverine once they tried to enter our world after the battle. Stryfe had also joined the battle, but was inconsecutively defeated in one fellow blow - cutting his head right off. He healed but threw Wolverine into the blackness of space onto the unforgiving surface of the moon. The Moon's frigid air kept Logan in a state of suspension - as the pressure of space crushed his adamantium skull. By the time he had no oxygen - he finally began to fall towards the Earth's atmosphere. He burned up all but to a crisp - landing in a desert making a crator. The next comic issue, a giant Billobong filled with Saltys (Crocodiles) appears. Next thing ya know the Salty grabs Logan's arm and three spikes come through the Crock's snout - killing it instantly. After running afoul Toad, Spike, and Mr. Sinister - whom all 3 gave everything they had (Wolverine beat Toad and Spike until they were retarded. The Shadow King tried to posses Wolverine but his Immune system crippled the Shadow King to a mere shadow dancer. Mr. Sinister gave it everything he had - but Wolverine shredded his stomach open and just mutilated Sinister until he offered a plea to get Logan out of Australia back to Stryfe.) A wounded Sinister dropped Logan off at an airbase in NYC where Stryfe was shocked to see Logan alive. This time Stryfe gave it all he had much like Apocalypse - and it was Cable whom had to save his estranged brother - as well as the Dark Riders (Spyne, Locus, and Genesis) Whom all 7 Riders and Cable gave it their best shot with ammo and mutant powers.....Wolverine remained victorious. He fatally wounded Stryfe - throwing him in front of a bus. While Stryfe was unconcious - Wolverine beat the crap out of Cable whom could not control Wolverine mentally - too vicsous. And Jean Grey tried to telekinetically stop wolverine but his fury ended up 'killing' The Dark Riders at the time - Logan also accidentally wounded Jean in the stomach with a claw. She eventually turned into the Phoenix again, that's when all hell broke loose and Wolverine chopped off Spines' head, mutilated Genesis to the point of facial reconstruction, and tore off Locus' limbs, just before going toe to toe with Cable - whom had his head crushed by Logan's Adamantium skeletanized fists pounding it. Phoenix burned Logan to the point of charcoal remains, but his skeleton still possessed enough intelligence to rip thru the cosmic being's energy - and kill it with one fatal blow to the head. (This only turned the Phoenix into the Dark Phoenix). His claw and body melted with the searing super nova heat signatures of the sun that the Dark Phoenix was flaring at him. But Wolverine kept his ground. He finally blew the Dark Phoenix up billions of lightyears away from earth. But He was burnt to a crisp - damn near vaporized/distintegrated. He was only alive in a suspended animation - until he went thru a black hole which actually ripped him to shreds - but his particles came back at the end of entropy (end of universe) and he suddenly time travelled back to earth in our time. He had won - but he had killed the one woman he truly loved:( In his final battle - he mauled Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze, and the Punisher whom begged for mercy at a completely brainless Logan Patch. By the time he realized what he had done - the Fantastic Four had joined in to settle the score. Spiderman and Scarlet Spider were barely standing - as theirs and Venom's webbing did not hold the furious animal. Logan shredded Venom to pieces, while Brock became a mundane punching bag, just as the Fantastic Four were also getting jabbed in the face. They combined their powers - but Reed and The Thing were sustaining fatal injuries - even Ben Grimm could not withold. The invisible woman tried to get behind Logan - but he pulled a ninja move like he did The Silver Samurai. He swayed to his left and elbowed her ribcage in. Human Torch burned Logan with all he had, but Logan laughed and beat the kid wonder to a pulp. Lilith and her demons fled back in pieces - with Lilith's and the Goblin Queen's faces bleeding profusely from defeat. Wolverine remains undefeated in the Marvel Universe. Thor was the only one to use his hammer and get wolverine's attention - but even he and Loki and all of Asgard were beaten to near extinction. Thor feared no law enforcer nor mutant or even god could stop the raging wolverine. Wolverine had one target: MAGNETO Once he had dismantled Thor and beaten Thunderstrike to hospitalization....he ended up trekking to Europe where Erik Magnus await his final days.
Wolverine vs. Magneto - Before he could even touch Magneto - he had the Brotherhood intercept him (vengeance for Toad) he ended up knocking out the blob and richocheting Richtor's face off with his own powers. Phantasia gathered Calypso and her sewer people to fight as well. Wolverine made quick work out of her and her sewer mutants. Phantasia ended up getting k.o.'d with a black eye and Blob, Reaper, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, and Polaris whom had boyfriend at the time Havok were beaten excessively with kicks and well landed punches to the noggin. Thier powers seemed to just enrage the Wolverine. He ended up crushing Alpha Flight as well - while Vindicator, Puck, and Guardian were seriously injured in the heat of the battle. Wolverine began to come about his wits - but still wanted to kill Magneto. Magneto tried to rip the adamantium out of Wolverine again, except this time. He charged Mags and implaled him with the same steel he was yanking out. Erik put the adamantium back because he knew wolverine had every right to kill him - especially this time. Wolverine left Erik to die - and ended up going to NYC where he killed Donald Pierce, Mystique, Mastermind, and Fatally wounded the Kingpin for answers on the whearabouts of Sauron - whom he also beat to a grizzly demise after interrogation. He was looking for Professor X!

What would happen if wolverine cut himself with his own adamantium claws?
You can't cut his head off, his skeleton is laced with adamantium, an unbreakable metal that nothing can cut through. But wolverine can die, if someone shut down his brain, he would die. I don't think anyone would be able to shut his brain down, though and I believe that even if his heart stops,it would heal

Can wolverine die, not in his current adamantium state but then again he did survive 3 wars, WWI WWII and the Vietnam war. So at this point I'm not sure wolverine can die. I mean we're talking about the guy who survived getting adamantium ripped off his bones.
so the answer to your Q is no, he can't die.
Did the hulk rip wolverine in half?
Several comic books have pitted these two warriors against each other before. Each time, there really is no victor, though. In the Ultimate Hulk vs Wolverine comics, nobody wins, but Hulk tears Wolverine in half at the end. The original fight has no winner, and in the movie Hulk vs Wolverine, again nobody wins. Wolverine almost kills Hulk, but is knocked unconscious by several poision darts fired by Deadpool. At the end of the movie they leap at each other, but it ends, and after the credits Hulk is shown running away, which can be interpreted in many ways. Nobody has officially won. But in a new "What If" comic, Wolverine stabs Hulk in the heart, and leaves him for dead. Although rather cheap, the Hulk heals and attacks Wolverine from behind and rips his spinal cord, thus killing Wolverine. But that was in "an alternate dimmension just to show how it would affect other characters if that were to happen". So again nobody has ever officially won, but I think Wolverine would kick Hulk's a** if they fought to the death.

Wolverine has not died and his age is unknown.
(He doesn't age, if you have watched the Wolverine Origins movie you can answer this easily. in the movie, it shows a flash back of himself fighting through all the wars with a good friend that is showed later in the movie)
Edit: If you watched that movie you'd realize he started the movie as a child. By the end of the movie he's a grown man. Therefore he must have aged.
Edit: Wolverine has died many times age unknown but when he dies he fights the angle of death witch goes by many names. His soul reached purgatory in Death of wolverine comics 56-61.

John Howlett.
There were issues that claimed that Sabretooth was Logan's father, but those were shown to be false memories.
-John Howlett was believed to be Wolverine's father for his early years, However he is actually the illegitimate son of the groundskeeper Thomas Logan and his mother Elizabeth Howlett. This is where Wolverine derives the name Logan.
