To what are wolves related?

Yes, wolves are related to dogs. They all come from the canine family. Dogs descend from wild wolves and they share lots of behavioral traits such as marking territory and barking just like cats are related to lions. They are all part of the Feline family.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The above is partially misleading. Almost all animals mark territory and wolves do not in fact bark as domestic dogs do. It really isn't quite so simple. While they are from the same overall family [Canidae] they are in fact from very distinct branches. The wolf is from Lupine, the fox from Vulpine and the Dog from Basal.

Latest genome research has revealed that the common ancestor of wolves and dogs was a large wolf like creature that lived in Europe between 9,000 and 34,000 years ago. However so much time has passed and genetic shift occurred that dogs today are in fact more closely related to each other than they are to wolves. They are at best very distant third cousins. The difference thus is less like a domestic cat and a lion and more like humans and orang utans.

The study by Adam H. Freedman and published in PLoS Genetics is easily found online and will offer a more detailed examination of the latest research including insights into the domestication of dogs.

When is the wolf breeding season?

The mating season starts in the winter from about January and continues for roughly a month. Females come into oestrus at this time for five to ten days. Fertilised females produce cubs in the spring.

The time of breeding corresponds to the part of the year when hunting is easiest. Parents are therefore relatively well fed and in peak condition for the task of bringing up a family. Foetuses will be well nourished in the womb and cubs in the den may have ample food.

Onset of breeding activity relates to latitude. Wolves living geographically further north start breeding later than in southerly climes. Arctic wolves give birth as late as May to June. They also have fewer cubs on average than their more southerly neighbours.
Mating for most wolves take place from January to April, and the pups are born in the spring.

Never approach a stray dogs with bare arms or legs. You need to be covered for extra protection in case of attack. Also, wear gloves and have a towel or sheet to hold infront of you when approaching. This also allows you greater ease to wrap the dog in the sheet/towel when you reach it. By wrapping the dog gently you are both providing a sense of safety and warmth aswell as protecting yourself from potential attacks. Do not cover the dogs eyes as this will spook it and can cause the dog to attack out of fear. Finally, before approaching the dog, check for any visable signs of broken bones (limping/holding a paw off the ground), or wounds (bitemarks/bleeding). Be sure to be cautious of these when lifting the dog as to not touch them or hurt the dog further.
