Many modern banknotes include a thin or thick aluminum coated polyester thread embedded into the paper during manufacture. Many examples are surfaced on alternating sides, giving the impression that the thread has been sewn through the paper. Some notes, including modern Bank of England issues, use a wider strip which has holographic images printed along them.
This is a complicated security feature that is difficult and expensive to replicate, making forgeries considerably harder.

Why is john redman bovell on the two dollar note?
John Redman was a scientist and agronomist, and is credited with saving the sugar industry in Barbados and the wider Caribbean.
In the 1880s the industry was being threatened by competition from European countries (sugar beet) as well as by drought conditions and disease that were affecting the sugar cane crop in the West Indies. In response to the threat, Bovell conducted experiments at his own expense on different varieties of cane, abandoning the Bourbon variety, which was the most commonly used at the time, and working with the White Transparent variety.
His genetic experiments established Barbados as perhaps the leading cane breeding station in the world, and made him in high demand throughout the Caribbean. In recognition of his services, he was appointed as Agricultural Superintendent of sugar cane experiments in Barbados.
In addition to working with sugar cane, Bovell, who was very much in favour of diversifying agriculture, developed several strains of Sea Island cotton.
In 1908, John Redman Bovell was awarded the Imperial Service Star for his contribution to tropical agriculture.
John Redman Bovell died in 1928.

How much money is a 1923 hundert tausend mark worth?
Any German currency with that date and denomination (100,000 marks) was a paper note issued during the hyperinflation period of the Weimar Republic and not a coin.
100,000-mark notes were issued a 2 different times. Sammler.com, a major German collectibles site, lists the following approximate values as of 05/2012:
> 1 Februar (February 1): US$3.25 in average condition, $10.50 uncirculated.
> 25 Juli (July 25): $1.30 / $3.25
Despite its apparent huge value these bills were quickly rendered worthless by galloping inflation, so many were put away with almost no circulation wear. Occasionally people think the high denomination means they're worth enormous amounts but in fact they're barely more than curiosities today.
Most people have this dream of hitting it big with old money, and sometimes it does happen, but there are two things to take into consideration before selling your old money and finding out the value of it.
One thing you have to find out is how many of that mark were made in that year as it's the amount of coins minted that makes them valuable, not the year of them.
Secondly, is this coin worth a collector putting money on? Is it in good condition, not scratched, as if a coin is badly scratched most coin dealers won't have anything to do with it, no matter how many were minted or how old it is. If it's scratched it looses it's value.
Your best bet would be to let a coin dealer look at it and get an appraisal, these people know the coin business, and they'd be better to ask your question to get the right .
Good luck
I have one of these too. I believe it is greek as I recognize the letters omega and sigma in the writing and the porpoise just seems greek to me. Also the A in apx is actually a triangle which is Delta in the greek alphabet. P is Pi and X is chi. Of course, "it's all greek to me" I only know what I had to learn to join the frat. However, for all I know there are other countries around the region that use greek or greek looking letters. Update: it is a greek 20 drachma coin. It is 83% silver and worth approx. 17 euros in uncirculated condition according to http://www.fleur-de-coin.com/shop/showcart.asp?id=drs46 which has a photo of the coin too

Does a 1977 50 Deutsche Mark bill still have any value?
It was worth about $25 in 2002 when Germany switched to the euro.
If you're travelling to Germany or know someone who is, the German central bank (Deutsche Bundesbank) will exchange old DM notes and coins without surcharges at any of its regional branches in Germany; these are located in most major and many secondary cities.
In the US it may be possible to exchange it at a major American branch of a German bank (e.g. Deutsche Bank, Dresdener Bank, etc.) or at a currency trader such as Amex, but the conversion charges for an obsolete bill will almost certainly eat up most or all of its exchange value.

The paper money you are looking at is 5,000,000 Greek drachmas (δÏαχμαι Ï€Îντε εκατομÏÏια, or ΔΡΑΧΜΑΙ ΠΈÎΤΕ ΕΚΑΤΟΜΎΡΙΑ, or in Roman alphabet drachmai pende ekatomyria). At the time of the changeover, 5,000,000 drachmas was worth exactly €14,673.51; however, you can no longer convert old drachma bank notes, so its value is limited to its worth as a collector's item. Also, there was no 5,000,000 drachma banknote at that time, so it is likely that you have an older Greek banknote, again valuable only as a collector's item.
