Apparently it works very well, my mom and my brothers friend both have 3g hotspots and live works fairly well. With 4g it will be an improvement, plus the verizon 4g lte works with 3g as well so you will still be able to play in areas that only get 3g coverage. You can go into a game retailer and buy a Xbox live membership card. As you sign up, select redeem code and enter the code you got with the card. Simple as that.

No you still have your old gamer tag game score and profile. but when you create a new profile you have to create a new gamer tag becouce its a new profile and after you finish creating your new profile you can switch between the the two profiles on your xbox your old one with your original gamer tag and your new one with your new gamer tag so over all you lose none of your old data but you now have 2 different separate profiles that can not effect one and other one bit .
