An eighth grade student may be asked to write a composition on a zoo. This could be about a particular zoo, its size, location, and different animals or perhaps it might be about how a zoo is organized and the different employees needed to make it work efficiently.

Both are excellent and run by the same organization. The zoo is closer to downtown San Diego and features the animals in a more compact, though still quite spacious setting. The Wild Animal Park is located about 30 minutes north of downtown in a rural setting with more open spaces for the animals to roam in mini herds. These can be viewed by riding the park's tram. The Wild Animal Park also gets quite toasty between July and October, so bring lots of water!

There are many different types of veterinarians, each with their own unique working conditions. However, in general, small animal veterinarians in private practice (the vet who looks at cats and dogs) work primarily inside a clinic. They usually work a regular day shift but may have to work overnight and emergency hours as well. Large animal veterinarians in private practice (vets who look at horses, cows, pigs, other farm animals) typically work at the farms or stables where the animals live. They are often exposed to the weather (hot, cold, rainy, windy, etc.) and generally cover day hours and overnight and weekend emergency hours. Research veterinarians work in labs taking care of the lab animals; they generally work normal day hours but are on call overnight and weekends in case of emergency. Public health veterinarians (also called federal veterinarians) work for the federal government in one of about 15 different agencies covering everything from food safety (USDA FSIS) to animal drug reactions (FDA CVM) to monitoring the importation of live animals or animal products (USDA APHIS). They work a regularly scheduled shift, sometimes with overtime, but rarely have overnight or emergency hours and are usually working in a building somewhere. Military veterinarians work the same shifts under the same conditions as active duty military - usually a regularly scheduled day shift with some emergency duties and active duty deployments overseas.

Some people view zoos as bad because they feel animals are detained. Some zoos are no trained properly to care for the animals they own. Zoos who provide proper medical care, proper diets, and proper living facilities are safe for the animals. Some zoos actually house many injured animals, and care for the ones who could never be returned to the wild.

Zoo Negara accepts the abandoned animals but the dumping has created management problems. Their food and handling cost money. Some are ill, malnourished and need special care, taking up the zoo's limited quarantine space. Primates are released as they fight in shared enclosures. Against its policy, the zoo is also forced to accept animals of suspected illegal origins.

In some ways, yes, the Santa Barbara Zoo is better than the LA Zoo. For example, the Santa Barbara zoo has more species of animals available for viewing, and they charge less of a an entrance fee.

I think zoos are a good intention but bad idea. First, let look at the bad idea. The fact is, animals in captivity are sometime more aggressive then there wild counterparts. Additionally, captive animals are not able to return to the wild without extensive rehabilitation and there are still no guarantees. In addition to that, they are very costly. Some zoos, are public domain and are often sponsored by tax-dollars and when they are not they are costs of admission and these costs are often very high.

But, there are some positive sides to zoos. First, zoos allow zoologists to study animals in unique ways. They can observe there eating behaviors, they can learn their medical biology (meaning they can learn how heal fix problems the animal might face and then apply similar treatment to animals in the wild if need be). They can teach animals to while learn. Primates (monkeys and gorillas) for example, have known to read, I think heard one could write or draw. One research noticed a distinctive vocal pattern then let her know they was being feed. In an addition to that, and perhaps the most important is we have managed to prevent several animals species from going extinct.
