when it was built much trading was done between Europe and India. before it was built to trade sailors had to sail around the cape of good hope i.e. the southern tip of Africa. After it was built sailors simply sailed into the Mediterranean Sea until they reached the canal, which connects to the Indian ocean which means over a thousands of less miles traveled
