The list would include:

the Eastern coastal region: This is the Atlantic side of the country. It is an area rich in farmland and coastal inlet features. This is where major Eastern rivers eventually empty into the Atlantic Ocean.

The Appalachian Mountain range: This feature includes the Great Smokey Mountains, the Poconos, the Catskills, and other readily identifiable regional mountains along the Eastern United States. It begins at the border of Main and ends near Birmingham Alabama. Of the two mountain ranges in the US, this one is geologically older.

The Mississippi River: This region includes the states that border the Mississippi river and is an area rich in farmland. Bisecting the country, the Mississippi River was/is a major factor in freight shipping to this day. There is a long history of this river which is most accurately celebrated in the early works of Samuel Clemens, otherwise known as Mark Twain.

The Gulf Coast region: This area includes the lower reaches of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and the Florida western coast. It is an area of mild temperatures, and is noted for frequent hurricane activity.

The Great Plains: This region would include the states of the Dakotas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Oklahoma, and Kansas. There are few variations in the landscape, being predominantly flat, hence the name the Great Plains.

The Southwest Deserts: This feature stretches from Texas through New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah. It is an area of limited moisture and includes Death Valley.

The Rocky Mountain Range: Separating the Pacific coast from the Great Plains and the Southwest deserts, this Mountain range is the younger of the two mountain ranges in the US. It's peaks are more rugged and higher than the Appalachians because of it's comparatively shorter age. Theories suggest that tectonic plate activity pushed these mountains up fairly recently.

The Pacific coast: This relatively narrow stretch of fertile ground ends abruptly at the Pacific Ocean. Known for its spectacular scenic beauty, the Pacific coast has it's problems in that it has limited natural water resources. While wondrous agricultural farming is done, the major drawback to the region is the overpopulation and the massive irrigation done to maintain it. This region includes California, Oregon, and Washington state.

There are actually nine regions:The Great Lakes: This area encompasses the states of Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Pensylvania, and New York. The area comprises more than 25% of the world's fresh water supply, and is the drainage basin for of the Midwest, not to mention the location of the largest natural salts (not just sodium) deposit in the world, and the location of one of the largest oil/gas deposits in the world (it's just very, very deep and hard to get at).
