Nigeria does not currently use post codes at all.

Nevertheless, in scam emails from Nigeria the criminals will often use "23401" as if it was a post code, for example "Lagos 23401". They pick it because +234 is the international country code for dialling Nigeria and 01 is the prefix for landline numbers in Lagos inside Nigeria. Their victims are more easily deceived if they think they know the location of the person they are dealing with.

Beware of emails from people who you never met personally who ask you to send money to a "doctor" in Nigeria after they themselves or a relative has supposedly been hospitalized for an accident or illness. There are several common Nigerian scams involving fake doctors:

1) The "dying widow" who has cancer and wants you to inherit her fake fortune, if you send real money to her fake lawyer.

2) The "dying merchant" (the male version of the "dying widow").

3) Romance scammers who profess being in love with you and call you their fiancee or husband or wife, who invariably either have an accident or one of their family members has one or falls gravely ill, usually just as they are about to come to see you. They then need real cash quickly to pay the fake hospital bills by the fake doctor, or someone will (supposedly) die because you didn't send the money.

The common denominator is that you can't verify anyone's identity in Nigeria. If they want money you have to assume that they are one of over 100,000 professional scammers who populate the internet cafes in Lagos, Nigeria or elsewhere in the country. It's a local cottage industry.

Never trust strangers with a +23480 or +23470 Nigerian mobile phone number.

Never send money to a person in Nigeria that you only know via email or phone.

Never send money anywhere by Western Union or MoneyGram unless you personally know the recipient from real life.

Ignore these warnings and your kind heart will be taken advantage of by unscrupulous criminals who abuse the trust and good will of others to steal money from them.
