The expedition's goal as stated by President Jefferson was "to explore the Missouri River, & such principal stream of it as, by its course & communication with the water of the Pacific Ocean may offer the most direct & practicable water communication across this continent, for the purposes of commerce." In addition, the expedition was to learn more about the Northwest's Natural Resources, inhabitants, and possibilities for settlement,
Jefferson's instruction to Lewis were:
"Beginning at the mouth of the Missouri, you will take observations of latitude and longitude at all remarkable points on the river, & especially at the mouths of rivers, at rapids, at islands & other places & objects distinguished by such natural marks & characters of a durable kind, as that they may with certainty be recognized hereafter....The variations of the compass too, in different places should be noticed."
(considering the Native Americans) "...You will therefore endeavor to make yourself acquainted, as far as diligent pursuit of your journey shall admit with the names of the nations & their numbers, the extent & limits of their possessions; their relations with other tribes or nations; their language, traditions, monuments, their ordinary occupations in agriculture, fishing, hunting, war, arts & the implements for these, their food, clothing, & domestic accommodations, the diseases prevalent among them, & the remedies they use, moral and physical circumstance which distinguish them from the tribes they know, particularities in their laws, customs & dispositions, and articles of commerce they may need or furnish & to what extent."
"Other objects worthy of notice will be the soil & face of the country, it's growth & vegetable productions, especially those not of the US; the animals of the country generally & especially those not known in the US; the remains & accounts of any which may be deemed rare or extinct; the mineral productions of every kind, but more particularly metals, limestone, pit coal & saltpetre, salines & mineral waters, noting the temperature of the last & such circumstances as may indicate their character; volcanic appearances; climate as characterized by the thermometer, by the proportion of rainy, cloudy & clear days, by lightening, hail, snow, ice, by the access & recess of frost, by the winds, prevailing at different seasons & the dates at which particular plants put forth or lose their flower or leaf, times of appearance of particular birds, reptiles or insects."
his want to explore and discover
Jefferson Davis was the President of the Confederate States of America for its entire duration during the Civil War (1861-1865). At first the Confederate Congress made Davis the provisional president and then within a year or so elected him as the permanent president. As an aside, the Confederate Constitution called for a president's term to be one of six years, with no reelection allowed. Davis had good qualifications. He had attended a good college, Transylvania and later graduated from West Point. He had also served for a time as the US Secretary of War.
'Sold down South' or 'Sold down the river' refered to the generally more brutal treatment slaves received in Mississippi and Louisiana. The Confederate president Jefferson Davis was unusual in being a Mississippi landowner who treated his slaves so well that they didn't want their freedom.
President Hoover's economic policies had failed.
You have to be smart enough to appreciate that what the people want from you you don't always have.
to explore the west :)
Lewis and Clark's expedition fulfilled Thomas Jefferson's Continental vision because Jefferson want the U.S. to expand from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and even though there was no "Northwest' passage" Lewis and Clark still discovered a way to get to the Pacific ocean through rivers branching out.
President Thomas Jefferson tasked Meriwether Lewis and William Clark with exploring and mapping the newly acquired Louisiana Territory, specifically to find a practical route across the western part of the continent to the Pacific Ocean. He also instructed them to study the geography, flora, fauna, and indigenous peoples they encountered during their expedition.
I am not sure what you want to know. Jefferson was not an explorer, although, he figuratively explored the many subjects that he was interested in, such as natural science, architecture, political science, music, technology and foods. As President, he engaged Lewis and Clark to explore the new Louisiana Purchase, made at his urging.
he Lewis and Clark expedition also met several French trappers, and more famously Sacajawea and her husband Toussaint Charbonneau when they wintered at the present site of Bismarck, North Dakota in 1804. However, they warned specifically by President Jefferson to stay away from British trappers as relations between the two countries were strained and he didn't want them to be led astray.
what Lewis and clark wanted to accomplish was to map the entire Louisiana purchase
yes.
Thomas Jefferson sent them to explore the land west of the Missippi. They eventually ended up in Oregon. If you want to know more, iit is also a book.
