The US Civil War, for the most part was fought in the Southern states that seceded from the Union. There were also battles at sea, but small events compared to the clash of huge armies east of the Mississippi River. To be complete, mention needs to made of Southern incursions into Maryland, Kentucky, Missouri and Pennsylvania.

There are reports of battles in Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, D.C., Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennslyvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia. Out of all of these, Virginia had the most battles, and Tennessee had the second highest amount.
There were even naval engagements as far away as the French coast.
