The United States created three main branches of government and gave them checks and balances so that no one branch has unchecked power.
Democracies are different from other governments, because they let the citizens of the country be involved in the government process. This is achieved by letting them vote for representatives that will represent them in the high branches of the government or by allowing them a direct vote on policy.
A democracy is a unique form of government where the people get a voice in the government. The term democracy even means to be ruled by the people, thus giving it it's name. Rulers/leaders in a democracy are appointed by the people through voting. The United States is an example of a democracy because the president, governors, etc. all get into office when the people vote.
There are also many other forms of government besides a democracy, some of which one may not have thought of, and some quite popular.
Some examples include monarchy, Dictatorship, or anarchy.
A monarchy is a form of government in which a king and/or queen rule the country. Like in the United Kingdom (who currently only have a queen) this is usually known as the "royal family," and being in the family, is what makes you a future ruler. Monarchies today may still work this way, but the amount of power the queen has is not the same as it used to be long ago.
A dictatorship is a government that is run by one, or just a small amount of people. This form of government due to only really having one ruler, can keep order on a fear factor, but the people usually don't enjoy all the decisions due to being from one person, which is why this government isn't as popular today. Sometimes in other forms of government there may be someone who may act like a dictator, but they don't say that. The principle act of them having residing power technically could fit them though.
Lastly, an anarchy, is actually just simply a government, where there is no government. An anarchy is lack of government, and can cause a lot of chaos since there is nobody around to keep order and control.
There are still other governments in different countries/societies, but these are just some good examples. Government is one of those things that can be totally different depending on where you live.

Under the United States Constitution, the Executive branch is operated and elected separately from the Legislative branch, the Congress. They interact with the Judicial branch, the courts, under the principle of separation of powers, placing checks and balances on the power of each branch. In some democratic governments, notably the United Kingdom, the Chief Executive (prime minister) and his cabinet are selected from within the legislative branch.
First: a principal is the head teacher in a school. A principle is an over-riding and important justification for a particular belief or point of view. For example: My school principal believes in the importance of the principle of parental involvement with homework assignments. To remember the difference... The principal is your "pal"... (really!) When comparing the US and the UK democracies it is notable that the UK has no written Constitution. Its constitution is drawn from Common law and Precedence. Jim
