We're talking then about the period of roughly 1580-1650 AD. The Dutch had become the biggest maritime nation of Europe in terms of freight transport, and helped the ecomomic growth of the islands no end by Importing and Exporting goods and people - slaves among them - to the Caribbean. In the process, they acquired six Caribbean islands as colonies for themselves plus further north, New Amsterdam, later to become New York.
After four maritime wars between Britain and the Dutch Republic, the British managed to uphold their Navigation Act that stated that any freight destined for British harbors could only be transported by British ships or ships of the country of origin (who usually had no fleet to speak of).
After that, much if not most of the Carribbean trade was taken over by British ships, since the Dutch decided to focus on their trade with East Asia where their position for the time being remained uncontested.
