Barack Obama was born August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, HI. His father, an economist, was born in Kenya and his mother was born in Kansas. At the time of Obama's birth, both his parents were students at the East-West Center at the University of Hawaii. When Obama was two years old, the couple divorced. Ann Obama then married another East-West Center student from Indonesia. The family moved to Jakarta in 1967, where Obama's half-sister Maya was born. They returned to Honolulu in 1971 where he stayed through his high school graduation from Punahou School -- a private prep school which charges $17,300 per year (as of January 1, 2010).

He graduated from Columbia University in New York in 1983 and worked in the business sector for two years, then moved to Chicago in 1985. There, he worked on the South Side as a community organizer for low-income residents in the Roseland and the Altgeld Gardens communities.

He entered Harvard Law School in 1988 and received his law degree in 1991, graduating Magna-Cum-Laude.

After law school, Obama returned to Chicago to practice as a civil rights lawyer, joining the firm of Miner, Barnhill & Galland. He also taught at the University of Chicago Law School, and helped organize voter registration drives during Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign. On October 3, 1992, he and Michelle were married. They moved to Kenwood, on Chicago's South Side, and welcomed two daughters: Malia (born 1998) and Sasha (born 2001).

He was elected to the Illinois State Senate in 1996, then to the US Senate representing Illinois in 2004, then to the US Presidency in 2008.
Illinois is where he lived much of his adult life and Hawaii was where he was born and spent much of his childhood and teen years.

He later settled in Illinois, where he married, bought a house, ran for political office for the first time, and established his legal residency. So, in some ways he could claim both Hawaii and Illinois as the states he belongs to. It should also be noted that he spent some time living in Los Angeles, New York, and Cambridge MA while he was attending college and then law school.
