The Black Codes were passed to ensure a compliant and subservient slavery system under white rule. The laws removed any rights slaves had to humane treatment by literally giving slave owners the "godlike" decision of life or death over another human . If a slave owner claimed a slave challenged or resisted him, he could use beatings, torture, rape and even murder without any fear of repercussion.

How did black codes restrict the freedmen?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

the black code prevented the blacks from participating in elections and also restricted them from certain works. They were codes that mainly Mississippi used in keeping their inferiority. They wanted to let the blacks know that even after the war, they were still going to be low lives. That's why Thaddeus Stevens, would never be compensated with what Lincoln was doing. He said Lincoln was too merciful. Thaddeus would write the Call for Radical Reconstruction where he states that the blacks had equal rights and where supposed to be treated equally. he also wrote that the emancipated blacks should have right to participate in election and that unlike Lincoln, the southern leaders that promoted slavery should be punished. Though before Lincoln was assassinated, he supported and agreed with Steven's point's, he always said Steven was in no position to lay his ideas on the table or carry it out and that him Lincoln being the president was supposed to be in control. Several laws would be passed on after Lincolns death that would eliminate the black codes. The black codes prevented blacks from getting certain jobs and participating in social activities. What is the definition of black codes?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

black codes, in U.S. history, series of statutes passed by the ex-Confederate states, 1865-66, dealing with the status of the newly freed slaves. They varied greatly from state to state as to their harshness and restrictiveness. Although the codes granted certain basic civil rights to blacks (the right to marry, to own personal property, and to sue in court), they also provided for the segregation of public facilities and placed severe restrictions on the freedman's status as a free laborer, his right to own real estate, and his right to testify in court. Although some Northern states had black codes before the Civil War, this did not prevent many northerners from interpreting the codes as an attempt by the South to reenslave blacks. The Freedmen's Bureau prevented enforcement of the codes, which were later repealed by the radical Republican state governments.
