What is presbyopia What causes presbyopia How is presbyopia corrected?

Presbyopia usually occurs beginning at around age 40, when people experience blurred near vision when reading, sewing or working at the computer.

You can't escape presbyopia, even if you've never had a vision problem before. Even people who are nearsighted will notice that their near vision blurs when they wear their usual eyeglasses or contact lenses to correct distance vision.

Presbyopia is caused by an age-related process. This differs from astigmatism, nearsightedness and farsightedness, which are related to the shape of the eyeball and are caused by genetic and environmental factors. Presbyopia generally is believed to stem from a gradual thickening and loss of flexibility of the natural lens inside your eye.

These age-related changes occur within the proteins in the lens, making the lens harder and less elastic over time. Age-related changes also take place in the muscle fibers surrounding the lens. With less elasticity, the eye has a harder time focusing up close. Other, less popular theories exist as well.

Eyeglasses with bifocal or progressive addition lenses (PALs) are the most common correction for presbyopia. Bifocal means two points of focus: the main part of the spectacle lens contains a prescription for distance vision, while the lower portion of the lens holds the stronger near prescription for close work.

What homeopathic remedies can be used for puffiness under the eyes?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Here are some home remedies that will help: Rinse the area with cold water each day. Then, take two slices of cucumbers and let them sit on your eyes for 20 minuetes. This will reduce the puffies and soothe tired eyes. * : Mix a few egg whites and apply under the eyes, can also add a drop of witch hazel. * You can also put tea bags on closed eyes. This feels good and enriches them. * Chill 4 spoons in icy water, then place 1 spoon on each eye, when you feel they are not cold enough replace them with the spoons in the glass, repeat until you see improvement * * Head to Walgreens to find undereye lotions. They have a WHOLE bunch! * Cut down on salt, this often causes puffy eyes. Also alcohol will cause this too. * Sleep with two or three pillows instead of one. This way the fluids won't gather around the eyes/ * Don't sleep with your face smashed in the pillow. This causes puffiness. * Don't rub your eyes. * Add a cold compress. This will help and soothe too. * Beat egg whites and apply under eyes. Then rinse after a few minutes.

What causes eyes to not focus?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

There is a number of things that cause your eyes to lose focus, it might just be an eye problem or it might be depression or a psychological problem, these have been known to cause lack of focus... it may also be an increased intra-cranial pressure...

If it's very sudden, and especially if you have another symptom such as weakness on one side of your body or difficulty speaking clearly, go to the emergency room right now.

If this is a gradual problem with your eyesight, definitely see an eye doctor.

Can a single vision lens be made to correct presbyopia without having to go to a bifocal or trifocal lens?

User Avatar

Asked by Bigvel

Refine The QuestionBefore trying to answer the question the term "single vision" should be clarified. As I understand it, the term single vision is used by the eye glass industry to describe a single element lens with spherical front and back surfaces. Is that what the questioner means by a "single vision" lens?

1. Single vision lens means -the lens has only one power; Bifocal - two powers; Multifocal or progressive is self explanatory.

2. Bifocals/Multifocals are prescribed to give good vision for long as well as short/near .

3. Single vision lens can be made for presbyopia, if there is no power for long distance. The inconvenience is that you have to remove spectacles every time you see a distant object.

4. Sometimes seperate glasses are prescribed for distance and near if someone is not able to adjust to bifocals.

Two small hard lumps way under the skin just under the jawline and have had them for around three months what would these be?

User Avatar

Asked by SarahMulholland

ANSWER: Most likely lymph glands... If you had an abscessed tooth or severe acne/boil on one side of your lower face, the "poisons" would have drained into the anterior [front] cervical [neck] chain [they are grouped like a chain]. Lymph nodes [glands] grow to filter out toxins/poison in the lymphatic system, which is essentially the third 'circulatory' system of the body. If an enfection in located in one area of the body lymph nodes grow in direct relationship to the amount of toxin/poison in that area... Most nodes are deep within the body and cannot be felt. If the person affected has a severe viral infection then the nodes under the jaw can swell [grow]... If a child has an ear infection often he/she will develop swollen nodes behind the ear at the base of the skull... HOWEVER, if a person finds enlarging nodes under the jaw AND/or under the arms, the inside of the elbows, in the groin areas, then a physician needs to be consulted as this could mean other, possibly more serious conditions... Hope this helps!

Why do pupils constrict?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Pupils constrict when an object is brought closer to the eyes, to help them focus properly on it. Also pupils constrict when hit by light, the brighter the light, the bigger the constriction. If an equal amount of light shines into both eyes, the degree of constriction is generally equal. However, if the light is directed primarily into one eye (i.e., with a flashlight), the pupil of that eye greatly constricts (direct reflex) while the pupil of the other eye shows a much smaller degree of constriction (consensual reflex).

What is calcium buildup behind the eye and will it cause problems?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

to Calcium Build Up of the EyeI know from my experience calcium build up behind the eye will cause the eye to be very sore, red, watery and sometimes itchy. It feels like there is something there, depending how much there is. It's basically mountains of stuff that will cause the eye to also be dry. The reason why it waters is because it is trying to get rid of the calcium build up. This usually happens to people who have vision problems (like myself). It can surgically be removed, and it usually takes about a week to heal. Sometimes it can be healed with Polysporin for the Eye, and a fake tear drop called Refresh Luiquidgel or even Teargel. If it doesn't clear up with any of those items, go and see an eye specialist ASAP.

The inability to focus on close objects due to the ageing process. The crystalline lens loses its flexibility, and one has to hold reading material further away in order to focus. This results in the need for reading spectacles or contact lenses suitable prescribed.
