Pretty easy actually. The egr valve is that flyin' saucer lookin' thing on top of the engine next to the Upper Intake Manifold. You'll see it back near the firewall of the engine bay on the driver side. Should be two bolts holding it onto the UIM, and perhaps a larger nut on the underside, I'm not certain. It is very rare for the EGR valve to need replacement in these cars. Try searching for the Check Engine Light code on a contour web site & you should find plenty of info on how to fix your problem with minimal fuss. Typical causes for emissions related CELs are the DPFE sensor (easy fix), cleaning out the EGR passages behind the throttle body (easy fix), often both.
Remove the vacuum hose from the EGR valve. Pull the valve out of the air cleaner housing. Reverse the process to install the new valve.
Replacing ERG Valves in a 1998 Mercury Mystique is fairly hard because it requires great precision to avoid blocking the EGR passage.
