There is a single Phillips head screw in the centre top of the grille, remove it. There are 4 snap in clips, two at each end of the grille near the headligts. Use a small flat blade screwdriver to push the prongs of the clips up. As you are pushing the prongs up lightly pull the grille towards you, working one end of the grille then the other. This should release the front grille so you can un-latch the hood, so you can replace the cable.
Cheers Malcolm
Under the drivers seat area, under the truck on the frame rail, you will see the E-brake cable junction. Gently pry this apart and the brake will release. This will allow you to drive the vehicle until you can replace the release lever assembly. Remenber, your brake will not function until you replace the release lever. How about looking at the pedal mechanism just above the pedal and pulling on the release mechanism at the top of the toothed ratchet area where the cable would be if there was still a release cable.
# Remove the cover from under the facia panel # Release the nuts at the end of the cable at the release lever and disconnect the cable from the lever # Working from the inside of the car remove the clevis pin and disconnect the cable from the clutch pedal arm # Unscrew the two nuts which retain the cable grommet to the bulkhead and withdraw the cable from the car
unhook on the tranny and reach up under the dash and release from back of speedometer, pull it out and install new one.
If it is the gauge you have to pull the gauge cluster. If it is the cable you have to get under the car and replace it. It will be the only cable on the tranny. Good luck
odometer cable and speedometer cable are the same thing, unscrew cable from speedometer head under the dash and unhook it from the tranny and pull the cable out and replace with a new one.
The cable runs from the release under the dash to the adjustment bracket under the Silverado. Remove the nut at the adjustment bracket and disconnect the cable. Pull the cable at the dash end for some slack, and disconnect from the dash release. The cable can now be pulled out and replaced.
To replace the speedometer cable on a 1986 Chevy Celebrity: According to my factory service manual: 1. Remove the trim panel underneath the steering column. 2. The cable is held in place by a quick release button. Reach up by the steering column and push the quick release button and pull the cable off. I like to attach a wire or string to the cable so that I have something to pull the new cable in with. Then under the hood: 1. Pull the speedometer cable out of the dash, if you used a wire untie it. 2. Follow the cable to the other end at the transaxle. Unscrew the nut that holds the cable to the transaxle, pull the cable out. Reverse these steps to install the new cable. Be careful to follow the route of the original cable.
It depends which cable is broken. If the main cable is broken under the truck, the brakes should release on their own. If the brakes dont release, the cables are frozen from rust and need to be replaced. If the release cable from the handle to pedal assemdly is broken reach under the dash above the pedal and find the small release arm. Pull the arm toward you [ the rear of vehicle ] and the emergency brake pedal will release.
unscrew it from the speedometer head under the dash and unscrew it from the tranny and pull the old one out and install the new cable.
From under car... its not too bad on a lift you can find cable near the hood need to get the inner wire and pull with pliers
Try to get under the car and release it manually by pulling the latch (under the hood) where the wire comes out of the cable. This may require the removal of splashshielding and a flash light . Then once you have the hood open trace the release cable to inspect for damage or rust replace if necessary The latch it self may be the problem, if it is rusty spray it with a rust penetrent ,work it loose then oil it. Always use jack stands on a proper surface (level unbroken concrete) if you need to lift the car!
Try using a coat hanger with the ends cut off and bend it into shape to get under the hood and pull the cable release.
