There were 15,701 tornadoes in the U.S. in the years 2000-2011 with a preliminary count of 919 so far in 2012, bringing the total to 16,620. So far 2012 has probably had more tornadoes than the preliminary count indicates. So that figure will probably rise as some reports of minor tornadoes file in late.

Tornado Alley doesn't change from year to year, it always covers the same states of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Iowa.

However, this year much of the tornado activity has been outside of this region. So far this year 35 states have had tornadoes with 13 of those experiencing killer tornadoes. Worst hit have been Alabama, Missouri, and Tennessee.
