• more federal government involvement. Democrats do not generally like the tenth amendment and want the federal government to have more power

• Democrats want to change America into a democracy, hence the name

Republicans hold that the government should be the framework, but the work should be done by individuals. They also tend to support states rights over federal. Also, they tend to be more socially conservative.

abortion: let the woman choose (Dem) - restrict as much as possible (Rep)

corporate taxes: higher ( Dem) - lower (Rep)

Recent Iran agreement : great idea (Dem) - dangerous and worthless (Rep)

Syrian refugees : allow as many as possible into the country without strict checks (Dem)- Allow in only those who pass strict background checks.

This is actually a difficult question to answer in a neutral way, since the US is very polarized as a nation these days; each side tends to believe their party is the best, and the other party is totally wrong on the issues. It is also worth noting that each party has changed dramatically regarding its attitudes towards civil rights, women's rights, and gay rights. For example, in the late 1800s, it was Republicans who supported equal rights for black people and Democrats who opposed it; these days, it tends to be Democrats who are the most outspoken in defending civil rights for minorities.

While it is usually inaccurate to simplify things into "one side believes X and the other side believes Y" (since there are always exceptions), there are definitely some major differences in today's Republicans and Democrats. Republicans often believe in "small government," and they oppose expansion of what the government does-- in other words, many of them are fiscally conservative and believe it is not the government's role to provide health care, welfare, or other social programs. They believe the private sector is best suited for addressing those matters. However, it should be noted that there are several areas where Republicans do support expansion of government-- for defense and the military, and for preventing women from having abortions. Republicans have become the party with the most Christian religious conservatives, some of whom try to promote policies that benefit their religious views. Republicans have also become known as the party that most actively supports big business and promotes business-friendly policies. Thus, Republicans favor lowering taxes, especially for businesses and corporations, in the belief that this will create more jobs. (Republicans are often accused by Democrats of only catering to big business and the wealthy, and not caring about the poor and the working class.)

Democrats, on the other hand, tend to oppose the idea of "small government"-- rather, they believe government can and should be involved in making people's lives better, often through "social safety net" programs like providing children with health care or providing the elderly with social security or the poor with Medicaid. While they do support defending the country, they tend to be reticent to promote what they see as excessive spending on the military. They also tend to be more moderate or liberal on social issues-- for example, it is Democrats who believe it is not their place to tell a woman what to do with her body, and who support equal marriage rights for gay couples. Democrats have become the party where there are the most social liberals, people who believe in separation of church and state and who do not want to see any one group's religious views get special treatment. Democrats tend to be in favor of tax policies that help workers as well as helping businesses-- few Democrats believe that cutting taxes on big business leads to more jobs, and Democrats believe in policies that, as they see it, make life better and more fair for the lower and middle class, and not just the wealthy. (Democrats are often accused by Republicans of being big spenders and raising everyone's taxes.)
