The Islamic Caliphate only held together as one empire for 120 years (630 C.E. to 750 C.E.). This is less time than the United States was around and roughly the equivalent time of the worldwide British Empire (1830-1950). Therefore, it is not unrealistic or special that the Rightly-Guided Caliphate and its successor state the Umayyad Caliphate remained united. There was a strong intent to integrate the conquered populations and many in the territories wished to become Muslim due either to conviction or to financial incentive. When the Abbassids overthrew the Umayyads in the Middle East, the Islamic Empire broke up into numerous Caliphates and Sultanates (such as the Umayyads, Abbassids, Idrissids, Aghlabids), returning to the natural state of disunity. The Abbassid Caliphate would further break down into in the next two centuries into the Fatimid, Ayyubid, and Buyid Caliphates. The fact that the Ottomans became the spiritual successor State to the Rightly-Guided Caliphate by way of the Umayyads by way of the Abbassids by way of the Ayyubids by way of the Mamluks by way of the Seljuks, is purely incidental and only occurred because the central Middle East was consistently under the control of an Empire that was Islamic. These empires were held together by institutions such as the governates (wilayat), roads, and police/soldiers, just like every other empire. It just happens that track record of violence and repression is better for Islamic Empires.

The Muslims believe in ONE and the ONLY Almighty God. They believe in the last Prophet Muhammad (SAW). They believe in the same holy Book. They have the same basic beliefs. They are termed as Brothers by Allah Almighty and the holy Prophet (SAW). So, they are united and the Empire was united on these basic beliefs.

The diverse people of the Islamic empire were unified because Islam is based on Human Nature - ONENESS of God, equality of all human beings, indiscriminate justice for all, universal human brotherhood, love and tolerance, kindness even to birds and beasts. No deception, no oppression, no cruelty, equal rights, etc. These were the golden principles that appealed to all the people and unified them.

It is misleading to say that after the overthrow of Umayyad Caliphate, the Muslim Empire broke up into NUMEROUS Caliphates and Sultanates. It, rather, expanded up to Spain. So, instead of of One, there appeared Two Caliphates of Muslims, one at Baghdad, at other at Qurdova in Spain. (Refer to Philip K. Hitti -the famous Christian historian). Europe was in Dark Ages-it was called Wild, Wild, West then. Read the history and you will find that the Muslim Caliphate existed even till 1923, after World War-I. It was overthrown only when Germany and Japan, Turkey accompanying them, were defeated and the occupying forces divided Turkey among themselves. The caliphate was treacherously abolished. The last Caliph was Memat who was exiled in 1921.

Refer to History and this claim of British Empire (1830-1950) will seem a blot of shame on the modern face of British Rule. It period was marked with conspiracy, fraud, bribery, cruelty, whole sale butchering of innocent human beings, firing squads and gallows, looting and prisons. Imperialism of worst kind. I don't think that capturing the other nations by force and fraud, subjecting them to slavery, maltreating them is a matter of pride for any nation that claims to be CIVILIZED.

It is history.

Following are a few of the teachings of Islam which create unity, harmony and brotherhood among the people.

Ridicule, taunts, and biting words should be avoided in presence or in absence. Suspicion and spying are unworthy of men who believe. All humans are descended from one pair. Their honor depends not on race, but on righteousness. Faith is not a matter of words, but of accepting Allah's pleasure, and striving in His cause.

Al-Hujraat -49: Aya: 11: O you who believe! Let not some men amongst you laugh at others, it may be that the (latter) are better than the former: Nor let some women laugh at others, may be that the latter are better than the former.

Nor defame nor be sarcastic to each other, nor call each other by (offensive) nicknames, Ill-seeming is a name connoting wickedness (to be used of one) after he has believed. And those who do not desist are indeed doing wrong.

Aya: 12: O Ye who believe: avoid suspicion as much as possible: for suspicion in some cases is sin: And spy not on each other, and nor speak ill of each other behind their backs. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? Nay you would abhor it. But fear Allah: For Allah is Oft-Returning, most Merciful.

Baqra 2-177: It is not Righteousness that ye turn your faces to East or west.

But it is righteousness to believe in Allah, and the last Day, and the Angels, And the Book, and the Prophets, to spend of your substance out of love for Him, for your kin, for orphans, for the needy, for the way-farers, for those who ask, and for the ransom of slaves, to be steadfast in prayer, and practice regular charity, to fulfil the contracts which you have made, and to be firm and patient, in pain (and suffering) and adversity, and throughout all periods of panic, such are the people of truth and God-fearing.

178: O ye who believe! The law of equality is prescribed to you in case of murder: the free for the free, the slave for the slave, the woman for the woman, but if any remission is made by the brother of the slain, then grant any reasonable demand, and compensate him with handsome gratitude, this is a concession and a Mercy from your Lord, after this whosoever exceeds the limits shall be in grave penalty.

Cleanliness, purity, truth, obedience, kindness, sacrifice, right conduct, trust in Allah, Allah's loving care encompasses us, it is His protection we should seek. and other virtues lead to glorious spiritual Fellowship justice to women, orphans, and to all.
