Political sentiment for abolishing slavery had been growing in the North for decades. The South had been fighting constantly to protect the institution and admit new slaveholding states to the Union in order to keep the strength in congress necessary to protect it. But the Northern population was just growing too great to continue that. The southernors feared that the election of Abraham Lincoln and the Republican Party signaled that there would soon be an attempt to abolish slavery. Thus, in order to protect the institution, the southern states seceeded from the union so as to "free" themselves from the power of a government that might take away their slaves. ∙ 8y agoThe slaves were freed once the civil war was over. And part of why the war started was because the South had slaves and the North thought it was wrong. The South wanted to break away from the rest of the country but the North didn't want them to. So that's how the war between the north and the South started. During the war Abe Linclon, who was the president at the time, signed the Emancipation Proclamation (I probably spelled it wrong) that freed the slaves, but the slaves wern't actually let free until after the war.

∙ 8y agoThe institution of slavery in the US had been an issue during the construction of the US Constitution. Slavery had existed in the Western Hemisphere since the 16th century, and in a US Supreme Court case in 1859, it ruled that not only was slavery legal, but to add to the problem, the Court said that Africans could never be citizens and therefore had no rights.Most people since 1793, simply hoped the issue would "go away" but it didn't. Slavery was an important issue in the South but the common man in the North was not directly affected. They most likely would never want the USA to have slaves.
Slavery was part of Southern culture. The South felt threatened by radical Republicans ( few in number ) nevertheless. this issue galvanized the sectional differences between the states.
It was one factor that led the South to secede from the US.
The choice to turn this into an armed conflict was a disaster.
