Islamic Armies were to defend Islam and Muslims, to give people free will, and remove the oppressions imposed on them. Islam was nor spread by war and armies. It is a misconception that Islam was spread by the sword. Armies were formed to protect and defend the Muslims when they were being attacked and persecuted. The majority Muslims are in countries never invaded by Muslims as in Indonesia, Malaysia, west Africa, China, and other countries.

Islam was also a political force, i.e the Islamic Caliphates. The armies of these Caliphates were also fighting an expansionary war for territory just as every other empire did in those days. The call to "convert or die" was very rare, but when countries were annexed to the Caliphates, many citizens did convert either because they saw the Truth of the religion or to gain from the tax and work-related benefits that came from conversion.

Muhammad led his army to defeat his opponents in the Arabian peninsula, forcing pagans to convert to Islam. Over time, Muslim armies spread though much of the Middle East, then across North Africa. Although apparently invited into Spain because of internal divisions there, the armies of the Moors spread Islam into Spain. Muslim armies thrust into Central Asia and India. Generally, Christians and Jews were not overtly forced to convert, but this was a privilege less often accorded to people who were not 'people of the book'. Will Durant wrote in 'The Story of Civilization', "The Islamic conquest of India is probably the bloodiest story in history."

Did Islam spread considerably under the leadership of Abu Bakr and the success of Muslim armies?

Under Abu Bakr, Islam only regained ground lost in the dissension that occurred among the tribes that had united with Mohammed during the Prophet's life. Islam did spread considerably during the reigns of the subsequent Caliphs due to the conquests of Islamic Armies. 'Omar, 'Othman, 'Ali, Mu'awiya, and Yazid I all expanded the reach of Islam through successful attacks on non-Muslim States or regions. _______________________________________________________________ The role of Islamic armies was just to free the will of oppressed people and to leave them to select or maintain the faith that they believe in freely. Islam spread mainly due to its logic beliefs, authenticity of Quran, good morals, and honesty. refer to questions below for more details.
