If you don't have an owners manual, try this...
AnswerThe drain plug on the bottom says D2, which I assume stands for dexron 2. But being its not made anymore, you can use the current version of dexron 2 instead. You could also use ATF + 3, which is made by the makers of dexron... up to you, neither will hurt the transmission.I have a 98 Cherokee 4x4 and I am about to change the transmission filter and fluid. From what the owners manual says, I should use dextron III or Mercon fluid, same as for the transfer case, ( if it's a NP231 case). I considered using Mobil 1 synthetic trans fluid, but it does indeed say on the back of the Mobil 1 container Mercon V. I don't believe that it is the same as the other Mercon I,II,III etc. but I may be wrong. I am going to stay with what the owners manual says. So I purchased Valvoline Dex/Merc fluid which coinsides with the owners manual. By the way, I believe that all jeep Cherokee's from 1993 and up to 2000, used AW4 4 speed transmission's. It's Japanese and is very strong, as is the Command-Trac NP231 4X4 transfer case, which is as American as apple pie, made in America by New Process. However, if you have a Cherokee with full time/part time 4X4 , then you have the NP242 transfer case. This case is a bit more complex than the NP231, so the fluid requirements may be different.
drop the pan...
Dexron iii with mercon

No, do not mix trans and brake fluids. The trans is dextron and the brake fluid is dot3.
The auto uses Dextron. The manual uses 75w90 gear oil.
Automatic uses Dextron III Manual uses 80w90
Ceck out "what type of automatic transmission fluid is needed for a 1993 Jeep Cherokee sport and in the front and rear differential" on wiki-answers
AnswerOn my 1993 Jeep Cherokee Sport, with the AUTOMATIC transmission, I add it directly to the dipstick hole where you check the transmission fluid level. (The dipstick is near the back of the engine.) Use a funnel to add the fluid to the dipstick hole. Check the fluid level when the vehicle is at normal hot running temperature, idling in PARK. Don't overfill! It will only take about a pint (half a quart) of fluid to raise the level from "ADD" to "FULL". Add a bit at a time and recheck the level. Overfilling can cause foaming and loss of fluid. Finally, the 1993 Jeep Cherokee Sport is known to have a problem with fluid leak from the speed sensor on the transmission. So one has to add transmission fluid more frequently than normal.
Automatic transmission fluid.Automatic transmission fluid.
A regular Cherokee uses Dextron A Grand Cherokee uses Mopar ATF+4
the red fluid is most likely transmission fluid. if is coming from the front of the vehicle check the trans. lines where they connect to the radiator on right hand side. If the leak is on the middle of vehicle it is probably the rear transmission seal. If it is the seal you must disconnect the drive shaft, pry out the old seal and press/tap in a new seal. reconnect drive shaft.
If it is a manual, you put the correct fluid in it. If an automatic, do not start the engine. You need to drain it out of the transmission.
