Pretty much split up between the European powers. The two main powers were France and Britain. Portugal, Spain, Italy, Germany and Belgium divided up the rest. And only one country was independent: Ethiopia.
At the start of WWI South Africa had gained some form of independence as well, but it was still a dominion of the British Empire.

World War 1 never had colonies, nor has any other war before or after it. It did however cost the nations who fought in it numerous colonies, most notably Germany, who lost large possessions in Africa and Asia.

It was, however, the second war after world war 1 that at the end encompassed the greater part of the world including Europe, Asia/Pacific, Africa, Australia.
