Originally, the land was part of three areas called Philista, Canaan, Moab, and Amor. Later the Israelites moved into the land; it then became Israel, Philistia, Moab, and Phoenicia, and Judah (which became a separate kingdom from Israel later). Then the Roman Empire conquered the lands, and the area became provinces of Rome known as Idumea, Judea, Perea, Decapolis, Samaria, Galilee, Trachonitis, Iturea, and Phoenicia (all together known as Palestine). Then later the Roman Empire fell, and the area became part of the Ottoman Empire, and was still known as Palestine until about 1914. Later, when the Ottoman Empire fell to the Allies, it was split from the other lands of the Ottoman Empire, and was still known as Palestine (1914-1922) this was done by the Balfour Declaration. Later, violating the Balfour Declaration, the land was split into two areas one called Palestine, and one called Transjordan, and again the Balfour Declaration was violated when the British Mandate gave the Golan Heights to the French Mandate; the Golan Heights later became part of Syria. The land known as Transjordan eventually became the country called Jordan. The land known as Palestine at this time (1922-1948) became Israel (1948). Later, Israel would be split into Israel, and Palestine, which now consists of Gaza, and the West Bank. (The Golan Heights was captured by Israel in the Six-Day War.)
Palestine comes from Palaestina, the Roman name for that piece of land following numerous Jewish revolts in the territory. It was previous called Iudea or Iedumea due to its previous nature as being the area of Judah. However, after the revolts, the Romans wished to further antagonize the Jews after defeating their rebellions and named the territory after the Israelite rivals, the Philistines.
Palestinian Arabs, Turks, Magyars (Hungarians), and numerous other ethnic groups are not actually homogenous. They are composed of two historical groups that intermarried and created a unified culture. In the Palestinian Arab case, Arab nomads from Arabia conquered the Levant region and brought it under their rule. During that period, those Levantines who converted to Islam began to take on the same mannerisms as the foreign Arabs who had conquered them. They began to speak the same language, dress in the same clothes, and believe in the same general ideologies. This process is well-documented by Arabs and is called Arabization or Ta3arib (تعريب). This is why the Jews and the Christians of the Upper Middle East (the Levant and Mesopotamia) often do not consider themselves Arabs. Unlike their Levantine brothers whose conversion to Islam made them more susceptible to Arabization, they retained their pre-Arabized ethnic sensibility. Therefore, although Palestinians call themselves Arabs, the majority do not and should not have lineages that go back to Arabia, but to pre-Arab ancestors in the Levant region, likely Jews, Christians, and Pagans in the Byzantine Empire.
In c. 450 BC Herodotus mentioned a district of Syria, called Palaistine. In 135 A.D.The Roman Emperor Hadrian renamed Judaea Syria Palaestina, probably to revive the ancient name of Philistia. Philistia was a group of five towns (pentapolis): Ashkelon, Ashdod, Ekron, Gath, and Gaza. It ruled much of Canaan. The Bible portrays the Philistines as among the Kingdom of Israel's most dangerous enemies. Philistia was then conquered by the Israelites.
When the Romans invaded, the territory was called Judah. The Romans renamed the area as Syria-Palaestina, a derivative of the Jews' historic enemies the Philistines, when the Jews tried to revolt against the Romans for a second time. They additionally forbade the Jews from visiting Jerusalem. When the British created a Mandate in the southern Levant, they chose to use the English derivative of Roman title Palaestina which is Palestine. The Zionist Jews preferred to identify their national project as Israel rather than Palestine and so the name became appropriated by those who opposed that project who lived in the British Mandate for Palestine took the name "Palestinian" to refer to themselves.
Palestine
No one, because in he first century there was no such place as Palestine. The area did not receive the name Palestina until after the second Jewish revolt. In the first century, what would eventually become Palestine was a combination of Judaea and Syria.
Yes and No. The Mandate of Palestine was merely the British Name for the land they occupied in the Southwestern Levantine region of the Middle East. There was no nation of Palestine or independent Governate of Palestine at any point in the prior 2000 years. When the Jewish population of the Mandate of Palestine declared independence, they used the name Israel to denote their country. The Arab residents of the British Mandate preferred to continue using the name Palestine to represent themselves. The majority of the Mandate's land ended up in Israeli hands in 1949, but some parts were under Arab control. It is these Arab areas that will likely form the basis of the Palestinian State.
