The worst blizzard in history happened on the March 11-12, 1888. Forty to fifty-inches of snow were dumped on Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York. More than 400 people lost their lives. Fierce winds sank 200 ships, and snowdrifts buried homes and trains.

A group of pine trees was hit by a lightning strike and because of the windy and dry conditions, set a huge blaze going. The fire burned until October of that year and destroyed 793,880 acres of the park.
